Gamez, White lead ‘Dogs past Colorado State, 56-45 Aly Gamez and Candice White both record double-doubles in Fresno State’s third straight victory.
FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State reversed its trend against Colorado State on Saturday afternoon, snapping its five-game losing streak to the Rams with a 56-45 win at the Save Mart Center. Stellar defense by the Bulldogs on the day and double-doubles by Aly Gamez and Candice White enabled the 'Dogs to win their third straight game and move into a tie atop the conference with a 3-1 record in the Mountain West.
Gamez recorded her first-career double-double with 13 points and a career-best 12 rebounds. White paced the 'Dogs with her third-career double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds. The junior was 10-of-11 from the free throw line, missing her seventh of the game to end her streak at 68, two shy of the all-time mark of 70 set by Bowling Green's Lauren Prochaska in 2011.
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was an evenly matched opening quarter as both teams shot just north of 40 percent from the field. Colorado State did lead the entire first period but led just 17-14 over Fresno State at the end of one.
Both offenses stalled in the second quarter while the Bulldogs outscored the Rams 8-5 in the frame. The 'Dogs held Colorado State to just 2-of-14 shooting (14.2%) in the second and neither team was able to score during the final 4:22 of the half. The score was tied 22-22 heading into the locker room.
The scoring picked back up in the third period. The teams combined for 35 points in the quarter, including 10 points from White as Fresno State outscored the Rams 20-15 and took a 42-37 lead into the fourth.
The 'Dogs put together a strong fourth quarter, especially on the defensive end, as Colorado State managed just eight points. The Bulldogs poured in 14 points to secure a comfortable 56-45 victory, their third straight win and seventh in the last 10 games.

On the win over Colorado State…
"I thought our kids were really committed and played the way they needed to. It all worked the way it should."
On outrebounding Colorado State by 11…
"I think it is the commitment to get in there and block out. We are running a lot of zone and we are trying to figure out how to rebound in the zone."
On Candice White's free throw streak ending at 68 …
"I am so proud of Candice. She is such a special kid and a really good person. She is really everything that reflects Fresno State Women's Basketball. Her goal early to me was that she wanted to be ranked nationally (in free throws). Now it just gives her a chance to break her own record. She puts the work in. She has really worked hard on her shot and it deserves to pay off."
On heading to face Boise and New Mexico on the road…
"We take it one game at a time. We did what we had to in order to beat Utah State and I think we did pretty well tonight against Colorado State. We just figure it out and we go to the next place."

On her consecutive made free throws streak ending at 68…
"It doesn't really make me upset because I'm just happy we won. You can just start all over."
On Aly Gamez...
"She's another weapon and teams can't just sit off of her when they guard because she's crafty and she can shoot. She really understands the game a lot and values taking care of the ball and that's what we need. Being such a young player, that's great for her and why I'm so proud of her right now."
