Bulldog Bones
• With Fresno State's win 56-45 win over Colorado State last weekend, the Bulldogs snapped their five-game losing streak to Rams, the longest such streak for the 'Dogs against any Mountain West team. The three games to Boise State is the second-longest.
• On Jan. 3, Candice White broke the Mountain West record for consecutive free throws with 61, passing TCU's Emily Carter (2010-11). She missed her first free throw of the season on Jan. 6, ending her streak at 68, two shy of the NCAA Division I record. It ranks No. 2 all-time in Division I history and is the fifth-longest streak in all divisions.
• Fresno State is one of four teams in the Mountain West to have a record above .500 through four games.
• The 'Dogs have won at least three of its first four games in five of six seasons in the Mountain West.
• The 'Dogs are 7-3 since starting the season 1-4.
• The Bulldogs are 6-1 this season in games that are decided by 10 points or less, and 3-0 in games decided by one possession.
• Candice White has scored in double figures in 13 out of 14 games this season. One of the best guards in the conference, she leads the league in scoring at 17.1 points per game and has posted four games with 20 or more.
• Fresno State's quartet of freshmen have accounted for 40 starts this season and rank second, third, fourth and sixth on the team in total points.
Fresno State vs. Boise State
• Fresno State leads 24-13.
• The Bulldogs fell to the Broncos in all three matchups last season, including a 66-53 defeat in the Mountain West Championship game.
• In last season's contest in Boise, the Broncos slipped passed the Bulldogs in the final seconds, winning 67-66 on a free throw from Shalen Shaw.Â
A look at Boise State
• The Broncos currently own an 8-7 overall record with a 2-2 mark in conference play. Boise State is 6-4 in its last 10 games.
• Boise State is averaging just under 70 points per game and is outscoring its opponents by an average margin of 6.7.
• The Broncos' defense has limited its opponents to 39.2 percent shooting from the field thus far.
• Boise State outrebounds its opponents by an average margin of 7.1.
• Riley Lupfer (13.9 ppg) and Marta Hermida (10.9 ppg) lead the Broncos on the offensive end.
• Lupfer has been deadly from 3-point range this season as she currently sits at 42.3 percent (47-of-111) from behind the arc. She currently ranks second in the Mountain West in 3-point field goal percentage and 3-point field goals per game.
• Hermida is Boise State's main distributor as she leads the team with 4.9 assists per contest, which ranks second in the conference.
Winning close
Despite being one of the youngest teams in the country entering the season, Fresno State has gone against the grain when in tight games. The Bulldogs are 5-1 in games decided by 10 points or less, and are 3-0 in games decided by three or less as its youthful core has not wavered in crunch time.
• In each of their three wins that have been by three points or less (Montana, Weber State, Utah State), the Bulldogs have trailed midway through the fourth quarter and games have been tied with under four minutes to play.
• The latest that the 'Dogs have taken a lead in a win was versus Utah State on Jan. 3 when they took a one-point lead on a free throw by Candice White with nine seconds to play.
The closer
When games have been on the line for Fresno State this season, Candice White has been the Bulldogs' go-to player in crunch time. The lone junior selected to MW preseason all-conference team, is averaging 5.7 points per fourth quarter this season (3.4 above the next player) and 6.0 in the fourth quarter in wins (3.6 above the next player).
• During the Bulldogs' eight wins, Candice White has led the team in points in the fourth quarter during the five.
• During the last two games in which the 'Dogs have been tied or trailed in the final minute, White scored five points against Weber State and four against Utah State, including the go-ahead points.
Finding their rhythm
After starting the season 1-4, the Bulldogs have hit their stride, picking up seven of their eight wins during the last 10 games while averaging 67.1 points per game during that span.
• Since conference play has started (3-1), the 3-point line has been a difference for the 'Dogs, holding opponents to 19.0 percent (15-of-79) while shooting 36.7 percent (29-of-79) themselves for a plus-42 point advantage.
• Four Bulldogs are shooting over 37 percent the 3-point line (Aly Gamez, Breanne Knishka, Jordanna Porter, Candice White). Gamez and Knishka are leading the group at 46.7 percent (7-of-15).
Â
Got game
Standing just 5-foot-6, freshman point guard Aly Gamez is proved to that she can provide the spark offensively that the Bulldogs need alongside junior Candice White in the backcourt. Since taking over as the starting point guard on Nov. 30, Gamez has been a catalyst for the team going 7-3 as she has averaged 9.3 points per game and is shooting 46.2 percent from the field (30-of-65) and 46.7 from 3 (14-of-30).
• Since Dec. 10, Gamez has posted five double-digit performances in seven games.
• In the Bulldogs' 3-point win over Weber State to end the nonconference season, Gamez exploded for 11 of her season-high 18 points in the opening quarter.
• In Fresno State's first two home games in league play, Gamez came up clutch, providing five unswered points with under three minutes to go versus Utah State to pull the 'Dogs with one, and followed that up with 3-pointers at the end of the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth quarter after Fresno State's lead was cut to two with 24 seconds remaining in the third.
Not your typical freshmen
With four freshmen who came in ready to compete from the start this season, head coach Jaime White has thrown her newest group into the fire allowing them to learn on the fly. Fresno State's four freshmen Bree Delaney, Genna Ogier, Maddi Utti and Aly Gamez are collectively averaging 22.5 minutes per game.
• Utti, Gamez and Delaney are averaging 29.5, 23.9 and 20.9 minutes per game, respectively, while Ogier is averaging 15.8.
• Like Utti, Aly Gamez moved into the starting lineup during the nonconference season. Gamez started at point guard for the first time this season at UC Santa Barbara on Nov. 30. The two rank second and third on the team in scoring with Utti at 9.1 points per game and Gamez at 8.1.
