FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State Swimming & Diving team will have a home meet for the second consecutive week as the 'Dogs will host Fresno Pacific and Pomona-Pitzer in a double dual Saturday at noon at the Fresno State Aquatics Center.
Â
Admission is free for all Fresno State home swimming & diving events, and Saturday is Staff and Faculty Appreciation day as the 'Dogs will honor some of their favorite professors. Saturday's meet will also include men's swimming & diving between Fresno Pacific and Pomona-Pitzer concurrently with the women's races, alternating women's and men's events.Â
Â
The 'Dogs hosted Nevada last Saturday but were shorthanded, missing several swimmers as well as diver Irina Nikolaeva due to injury.
Â
"This weekend we're going to be looking to build on what we did last weekend," head coach Jeanne Fleck said. "Even with the loss, we had a lot of season best times and lifetime best times. We'll try to get some people in some different events this week as we have a lot of freshmen and I'd like to be able to see where they can help us the most."
Â
Fresno State won four individual events against the Wolf Pack, with senior Ugne Mazutaityte claiming both the 100 Back and 200 Back. Freshman Brenda Diaz Martinez won the 1000 Free and junior Manuela Mendolicchio was victorious in the 200 Breast.
Â
Through three meets this season Diaz Martinez has two first place finishes and has finished second in two races while recording the fourth-fastest times in program history in both the 400 IM and 1000 Free. Mazutaityte has three event wins and Mendolicchio has four top-three finishes.
Â
With Nikolaeva yet to dive this year due to injury, senior Kelli Funk has been the lone Bulldog on the diving boards. She posted third-place finishes on both 1-meter and 3-meter last week vs. Nevada and also dove on both boards in the Chick-Fil-A Invitational.
Â
Fresno Pacific, an NCAA Div. II school, competed with Div. I schools at the Pacific Invitational and placed fourth, finishing ahead of San Jose State and UC Santa Barbara. The Sunbird women are ranked 10th in the TYR/CSCAA Div. II poll while the men are 17th. The 'Dogs beat their local rival 185-115 last season.
Â
Pomona-Pitzer is an NCAA Div. III program and its women enter the week ranked 12th in the TYR/CSCAA Div. III poll with the men ranked 7th. The Sagehens have competed in two meets this season, defeating Concordia at home after opening the season with a loss at Cal Baptist. The Sagehens compete as a unified athletics program between Pomona College and Pitzer College.
