FRESNO, Calif. – Head Coach Linda Garza announced the 56-game 2019 Fresno State Softball schedule on Tuesday.
Â
The slate includes 28 home games and two home tournaments. The 'Dogs will face another stacked schedule, taking on seven teams that made the NCAA Tournament last season with two opponents (UCLA and Washington) that played in the Women's College World Series (WCWS). The Bulldogs also play six teams that competed in the National Invitational Softball Championship (NISC) last year and have 23 total games against 2018 postseason teams.
Â
"We are challenged early being on the road in addition to playing against great teams," Garza said. "The goal is to always put ourselves in a position to be prepared for conference play. Our focus is to get better, challenge our team, and get on a roll for conference. The goal remains to compete for a conference title and take that success into the NCAA Tournament."Â
Â
Fresno State will face three teams that finished ranked in the national Top-7 last year. Washington was the national runner-up last season and UCLA ended the year ranked No. 2 in the nation. The 'Dogs will also face Tennessee, which ended the year ranked seventh and made the NCAA Super Regionals, and also have games against NCAA Tournament teams Oregon State, Long Beach State, Boise State, and Sacramento State.
Â
The 'Dogs will again host a pair of tournaments in 2019, welcoming UC Santa Barbara, Montana, North Dakota, and Cal Baptist for the Bulldog Classic March 7-10 and hosting San Diego, Pacific, Santa Clara, and CSU Bakersfield in the Fresno State Invitational March 28-31. Another highlight of the home schedule will be a contest against Pac-12 foe Stanford at Margie Wright Diamond on April 23.
Â
The Bulldogs will play their first 16 games of the 2019 season away from Fresno with three road tournaments. The 'Dogs will open the year at the Hawaii Paradise Classic on Feb. 7 with games against UCLA and UT Arlington. Fresno State will also face Saint Mary's, Georgia State, and host Hawaii while in Honolulu.
Â
The 'Dogs will face 2018 NCAA Tournament teams Oregon State and Long Beach State and play a second game against UCLA the following week at the Stacy Winsbery Invitational co-hosted by UCLA and Long Beach State. Fresno State will also play Cal Poly and UC Riverside in the tournament and face Cal Baptist in Riverside the following day. After a week off the 'Dogs will face Washington, Tennessee, and 2018 NISC champion Loyola Marymount as well as UConn and UT San Antonio at the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton.
Â
The home opener for the Bulldogs will be March 7 as they host UC Santa Barbara to open the Bulldog Classic. The tournament will have 14 games over four days, with five-game slates on both Friday and Saturday, March 8 and 9.
Â
Fresno State will open MW play at Colorado State March 15-17 before returning home for a 10-game homestand. The 'Dogs host CSUN for a single game before hosting San Jose State in a MW series March 22-24. The following weekend the 'Dogs will break from conference play to host the Fresno State Invitational.
