Candice White leads all scorers with 22 points.
LOS ANGELES – Fresno State dropped its second road contest of the season on Wednesday night, falling 62-61 in a nail-biter against USC at the Galen Center. The Bulldogs led for nearly 27 minutes but Maryia Moore hit the go-ahead jumper for the Trojans with 5.2 seconds remaining.
Â
The 'Dogs got 22 points from Candice White after the senior had scored just 19 total in the previous two outings. Her seven rebounds were tied for the team high with Maddi Utti who also pitched in 12 points. Kristina Cavey added 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting. USC was led by Minyon (15) and Maryia Moore (12) who each shot 5-of-9 from the field.
Fresno State dropped to 3-2 on the year with the defeat while USC, who entered the game receiving votes in both the AP and Coaches polls, improved to 7-0.
Â
How It Happened
USC opened up the game on a 7-0 run, prompting an early timeout from Fresno State. Cavey got the 'Dogs on the board a minute later. Five points from White brought the Bulldogs back to within two. The 'Dogs grabbed their first lead of the game with 3:18 on the clock as Cavey dropped in a 3 to put Fresno State up 13-11. That shot triggered a 13-4 run to end the quarter. Fresno State led 23-15 after one behind a combined 21 points from White (12) and Cavey (9).
Â
The Trojans started the second with a 5-2 advantage before Shalexxus Aaron gave them the lead at 26-25 with back-to-back 3-pointers midway through the period. Fresno State scored the next four points before the two sides traded points the remainder of the half as the Bulldogs took a 33-31 lead into the break.
Â
Throughout the first six minutes of the third quarter, Fresno State continued to hold a slim lead, responding to each Trojan attempt to retake the lead through a pair of 3-pointers from Aly Gamez or a string of points from Utti. USC tied the game with four-straight points from Minyon Moore with 3:07 on the clock but the 'Dogs continued to answer as they held a 53-52 lead after three.
Â
Neither side could get their shots to fall in the final quarter as the 'Dogs shot just 3-of-11 from the floor and the Trojans 2-of-9. Trailing by one with just over a minute and the ball in Fresno State's hands, White was fouled while setting a screen. The senior knocked down both free throws with 1:01 on the clock. Utti forced a steal at the other end 20 seconds later but an errant pass on the offensive end led to USC regaining possession. Â Mariya Moore then gave the Trojans a 62-61 lead with 5.2 remaining with a jumper just outside the paint. Gamez was unable to convert on a high-arcing attempt in the paint and was forced to foul as USC grabbed the rebound. Despite Asiah Jones missing both free throws for the Trojans, the Bulldogs had just .1 remaining on the clock, not enough time for any play other than a tip-in as they would fall by one.
Team Notes
Candice White – 22 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists
Fresno State will travel to Cheney, Washington on Sunday as the Bulldogs face Eastern Washington at 1 p.m. PT.
