'Dogs overpower Santa Clara, 80-53, behind a 3-point barrage on Wednesday evening

Fresno State connected on a 14-of-22 from beyond the arc.
FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State women's basketball team caught fire behind the arc on Wednesday night, connecting at 63.6 percent clip from deep to propel the Bulldogs to an 80-53 win over Santa Clara in the Save Mart Center. The Bulldogs racked up 27 assists on the night, led by a career-high 10 from Bree Delaney.

Fresno State had three scorers reach double figures in Candice White, Aly Gamez and Jordanna Porter. White led the squad in scoring, picking up 19 points, four rebounds and four assists on the night. Gamez added 15 points, six rebounds and five assists, while Porter pitched in 14 points and three rebounds. The trio combined to go 10-of-13 for 30 points from 3-point land.
How It Happened
Trailing by three with 4:05 on the clock in the first quarter after a 3 from Tia Hay, Fresno State went on an 11-2 run. White scored nine of the points as the run gave the Bulldogs a 19-13 lead after one.

Scoring the last five points of the first quarter, Fresno State opened the second period with 3-pointer from Breanne Knishka before a steal by Bree Delaney turned into a Utti layup in transition. The quick points led to a timeout from Santa Clara with the Bulldogs leading 24-13 with 8:48 on the clock. After trading 3's, the Bulldogs struck again with a 7-0 spurt, punctuated by White as they took a 34-18 advantage. White added five more in the period to give her 15 for the half on 6-of-8 shooting as Fresno State took a 42-24 lead into the half.

Allowing the first five points of the second half and looking toward calling a timeout, a missed 3-point attempt for the Broncos turned into a 3 from Gamez. The open looked ignited a 12-0 which the sophomore point guard bookended with 3's. Jordanna Porter added a pair treys on back-to-back possessions late in the frame as Fresno State took a 25-point lead into the final 10 minutes.

The barrage of 3's continued into the fourth as the Bulldogs built their lead up to 30 at 71-41 midway through the quarter as Porter knocked down her third and fourth 3's of the game. With two more 3-pointers, Fresno State finished with 14 for the game, running away with an 80-53 win.

Fresno State will conclude its two-game homestand against Stanislaus State on Friday at 7 p.m. PT in the Save Mart Center. The 'Dogs will follow that matchup by traveling to Tempe, Arizona, to take on Arizona State on Dec. 20 at 1 p.m. PT.

- The Bulldogs knocked down a season-high 14 3's, passing two 10 made 3-pointer games. It was the most made 3's in a game for the 'Dogs since hitting 15 on March, 9 2013 against the Rebels.
- Fresno State shot 63.6 percent from 3-point range, the best mark of the season while holding Santa Clara to just 17 percent from beyond the arc.
