White, Utti post 20-point performances.
LOS ANGELES – Trailing by as many as 18 points in the third quarter, Fresno State put together a furious rally at UCLA to pull within three before falling 89-80 on Friday evening at Pauley Pavilion. The Bulldogs' effort was led by 32 second-half points from Candice White and Maddi Utti.
The Bulldog duo finished with 42 points on the night with White leading the team with 22 and Utti at 20. White scored 20 of her points in the second half after sitting much of the first half in foul trouble while Utti dropped 12 in the final 10 minutes. The two were joined in double figures by Aly Gamez and Kristina Cavey who each scored 12 points. UCLA had four players post double figures, led by Michaela Onyenwere (29) and Japreece Dean (23).
How It Happened
Fresno State gained a slight advantage at 12-9 midway through the opening quarter with a 7-2 run after Bree Delaney knocked down a 3 with 4:33 on the clock. The Bulldogs took a four-point lead with 1:45 to go as Gamez converted on an and-one in transition. Fresno State held a 17-15 lead after the first, holding the Burins without a bucket for the final five minutes. UCLA though finished 6-of-6 from the free throw line to keep the game close
Behind a pair of jumpers from Utti, Fresno State maintained a slim lead early in the second quarter. Back down by one with the two sides started trading baskets Gabby Standifer knocked down a 3-pointer to give the 'Dogs a 26-24 lead with 5:23 remaining in the half. That was Fresno State's last lead of the game as the Bruins seized control behind Onyenwere. Already with a big half, the sophomore scored nine points during the final 4:36 of the period to lead UCLA on a 14-3 run to end half and give the home side a 38-29 advantage. Onyenwere finished the half with 22 points.
Behind an 8-2 run in the opening two minutes, the Bruins built their lead up 46-31. White then got going but Dean answered with her second and third 3's of the quarter, building their lead up to 56-38 with 5:30 on the clock. The Bulldogs cut into the deficit with a 13-6 spurt but a pair of 3's from Lindsey Corsaro kept the Bruins ahead by 11 at 64-53. A 3 from Cavey to end the period brought the Bulldogs to within 10 at 66-56.
The 'Dogs began getting the ball into Utti to start the fourth as the sophomore scored the team's first 10 points to cut the Bruins lead to 70-66 with 5:29 to play. White tried to close the gap further, but Kiara Jefferson was there to answer with back-to-back 3's for UCLA. Trailing by six, Utti knocked down a jumper and Cavey followed with a triple from the corner to pull the 'Dogs within three at 78-75 with 1:59 remaining. Fresno State forced a stop and had a chance to tie the game but White's attempt from 3 was off the mark. Corsaro countered with a 3 at the other end to give the Bruins a six-point lead to put the game out of reach.
