'Dogs win season opener 8-6

PHILADELPHIA – The Fresno State women's lacrosse team defeated La Salle 8-6 on the road in its 2018 season opener. The Bulldogs were led by Ryleigh Bone and Sarah Bloise, who notched two goals apiece. Â
The Bulldogs improve to 1-0 on the season, winning their third consecutive season opener.
"We had a total team effort today for this win", said head coach Jessica Giglio. "Our defense played exceptional by holding La Salle to six goals. Sarah Bloise did a great job taking draw controls, along with Mackenzie Wallevand and Olivia Mannon supporting the unit on the circle. We are extremely excited to get back out and play again on Sunday!"
Bone, Bloise, Kayla Galet, Marina Mayo, Tiffiny Wallace, Olivia Mannon, Abbigayle Roberts, Alex Romanowski, Lauren Kiszely, Mackenzie Wallevand and Abigail Bergevin chalked the start for Fresno State, with Laurel Maunder in the box.
FIRST HALF
The explorers struck first when Emily Johnston found the back of the net to put La Salle up 1-0.
The Bulldogs responded quickly going on a 5-0 run, sparked by two goals from Bone, to take a 5-2 lead. Wallevand scored her first collegiate goal during the run, to go along with her first collegiate start.
La Salle ended Fresno State's run with 4:58 left in the half when Bridget Ruskey scored.
Dawson Chalifoux scored her first collegiate goal with 2:35 left in the half, off a pass from Marina Mayo, to go up 6-2.
The 'Dogs took their biggest lead of the game with 46 seconds left in the game, when Galet scored to give Fresno State a 8-2 lead.
Fresno State took the 8-2 lead into halftime.
SECOND HALF
Bloise opened up scoring in the second half, finding the back of the net with 27:37 left in the contest.
The Explorers finished the game on a 4-0 run, but it wasn't enough to erase the Bulldogs' lead. Time expired with Fresno State up 8-6.
NOTABLE STATS
As a team, Fresno State owned the advantage in shots (24-22) and ground balls (17-12). Both teams recorded 10 saves. La Salle posted more draw controls 9-7.
On offense, Junior Sarah Bloise finished the game with two goals, one assist, 1 ground ball, five shots and a team-high five draw controls. Mackenzie Wallevand finished her first collegiate lacrosse game with one goal, four shots and a team-high two assists.
On defense, Olivia Mannon finished the game with team-high five ground balls, team-high seven caused turnovers and notched two draw controls.
