Covington, Omawahleh lead ‘Dogs at UCI Spring Break Collegiate Classic

Bulldog women win meet behind 13 top-three finishes, including nine wins.
IRVINE, Calif. – Behind nine event wins, including two each from Breanna Covington and Njeri Omawahleh, the Fresno State women's track and field team won the UCI Spring Break Collegiate Classic with 160.5 points.
In the field, Covington earned the double in the long jump and triple jump. The sophomore won the long jump with her first attempt of the competition with a mark of 18'-4.5"/5.60m, and triple jump with her third attempt at 39'-0.5"/11.90m. On the track, Omawahleh won both the 200 and 400 meters. The senior won the 400 meters early in the day with a time of 55.68 before grabbing the win in the 200 at 23.82.
Early in the meet, Mountain West 60-meter hurdles champion Morgan Lewis made her first appearance for Fresno State outdoors as she won the 100-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 13.46. Finishing more than a half second ahead of second place, the freshman's time ranks second all-time in program history.
Fellow freshman Ellie Leather also won her event in her first outdoor appearance for the Bulldogs. Leather won the 800 meters, finishing with a time of 2:15.08. Also making her first outdoor appearance for the 'Dogs, junior Varvara Klyuchnikova won the high jump, clearing on her first attempt at each height, finishing with a winning mark of 5'-6"/1.68m.
Fresno State's last event win of the day came from Kayla Hopkins in the discus. With four marks that would have won the event, the senior landed a top mark of the 182'-4"/55.58m, 12-feet-5-inches ahead of second.
The Bulldog men finished seventh overall. The 'Dogs grabbed top five results from its 4x100 relay team (42.45), Jack Kuzminsky in the 800 meters (1:55.92), Shane Atkinson in the pole vault (14'-3.25"/4.35m) and Kevin Sundberg in the discus (166'-9"/50.83m).
