Ninth-inning rally comes up short as Bulldogs fall 7-6 at UNLV

Despite a two-run home run by junior Jeremiah Burks in the top of the ninth inning, the Diamond 'Dogs late-game rally fell short on Friday night as the 'Dogs fell 7-6 at UNLV in the Mountain West opener for both teams.
LAS VEGAS - Despite a two-run home run by junior Jeremiah Burks in the top of the ninth inning, the Diamond 'Dogs late-game rally fell short on Friday night as the 'Dogs fell 7-6 at UNLV in the Mountain West opener for both teams.
Fresno State (8-3, 0-1 MW) outhit its opponent for the eighth time in 11 games this season edging UNLV (9-1, 1-0 MW) 11-6 as nearly half of the 'Dogs hits went for extra bases. Burks hit his second home run of the season while senior shortstop Korby Batesole smacked his second triple of the year.
Redshirt freshman third baseman JT Arruda hit his fourth double of the season while freshman Zach Presno and Miles Tomczak each hit their first career doubles.
Despite being held to only six hits, UNLV (9-1, 1-0 MW) made the most of their limited offense exploding for a six-run bottom of the third highlighted by a three-run home run by first baseman Nick Ames. The Rebels' second baseman Nick Rodriguez added a solo home run in the fourth that turned out to the game-winning run for UNLV.
Bulldog starting pitcher Ryan Jensen was limited to his shortest outing of the season as the sophomore right-hander was only able to complete two innings allowing four hits, six earned runs but walked five and struck out three. Jensen, who came into the game only allowing six hits and no runs all season, had not walked a batter all season.
Relief pitcher Jaime Arias, Ryan Sullivan and Isaiah Davis combined to toss the final six innings only allowing two hits and one earned runs while striking out six.
How It Happened
The 'Dogs jumped out in front right off the bat with a three-run top of the first as Batesole, Carter Bins and McCarthy Tatum each collected RBI hits to give the visitors their most runs in a first inning all season.
Holding the Rebels to one hit in his first two innings of work, Jensen ran into trouble in the third giving up an RBI single to center fielder Kyle Isbel before a wild pitch allowed third baseman Dillon Johnson to score to cut the 'Dogs lead to 3-2. Ames' three-run home run pushed the Rebels out front 5-3 before right fielder Max Smith doubled to knock Jensen out of the game as Smith came around to score to give UNLV a 6-3 lead after three innings.
A solo home run by Rodriguez in the fourth innings made it 7-3 before a late-game rally by the 'Dogs saw Fresno State score three runs over the final three innings as Presno came around to score in the seventh inning on a double play after leading off the frame with a double. Burks' two-out home run in the ninth inning made it a one-run game before a groundout to second by Zach Ashford ended the 'Dogs hopes.
Notes
- It was only the second time the 'Dogs dropped their Mountain West opener in their six seasons in the league joining only 2015.
- The Bulldogs also dropped to 1-5 in MW road openers.
- It was Burks' fourth career home run & Batesole's sixth career triple.
- The five extra base hits tied for the second-most of the season behind only seven against Michigan State on Feb. 17.
- It was the Bulldogs first one-run loss of the season as Fresno State is now 5-1 in one-run games this season.
