Wilson provides clinching point in No. 1 match.
PROVO, Utah – Coming off a loss in Salt Lake City yesterday, the Fresno State women's tennis team bounced back today with a 4-3 win over BYU on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs won the match behind four singles wins after losing the doubles point, the first time they had performed that feat this season in eight attempts.
Â
For the eighth time in 16 dual matches, the 'Dogs fell behind early. The Cougars made quick work of doubles, taking the first two completed matches with a pair of 6-2 wins at the No. 1 and 2 positions.
Â
Unlike the previous seven matches in which Fresno State has dropped the doubles point, the team responded in singles, despite losing the first singles match to finish. Trailing 2-0, Olivia Noble got things going for the Bulldogs on Court 6, topping Hermehr Kaur 6-4, 6-2. Ndindi Ndunda then leveled the dual at 2-2 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Madeline Almeida at the No. 3 spot. Julinane Triebe made it three straight for the 'Dogs as the sophomore, responded from a 6-1 second set to oust Kate Cusick in three sets, 7-6(4), 1-6, 6-2.
Â
With two matches still playing, both in a third set, Fresno State's No. 1 stepped up. After forcing a third set a with a 6-3 win in the second, Emma Wilson clinched the dual match for the 'Dogs with a 6-3 win in the deciding set. In both 4-3 wins this season for Fresno State, Wilson has produced the team's clinching point.
Â
The win was the first for the Mountain West this season in five matches against BYU as the Cougars entered the day outscoring MW teams 20-4 (San Diego State, New Mexico, Boise State, Utah State).
Â
Fresno State returns home to host its final non-conference match of the regular season versus Eastern Washington on March 28. Match time at Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center is set for 6 p.m. PT.
