ALBUQUERQUE, N.M – Freshman Danielle East threw her first career no-hitter, recording all 15 outs via the strikeout as Fresno State beat New Mexico, 10-0, in five innings on Saturday afternoon.
Â
East threw the 74th no-hitter in program history but it's believed to be the first in which every out was a strikeout. New Mexico did not but a ball in play as the only Lobo baserunners came on one walk and one hit batter. East is the 22nd pitcher in program history to throw a no-hitter and gave the 'Dogs no-hitters in consecutive seasons after Kamalani Dung threw one against Florida Gulf Coast in 2017.
Â
"I've never pitched a game like that before," East said. "For me that's kind of on the bucket list of softball things to do so that was really cool. I was really proud of the way my team came through with their hitting today."
Â
"I really didn't think about it until the fifth inning," East added. "I don't really think about that stuff during the game. When we went up by 10, I was just more excited about the fact that we could be done in the fifth inning to be honest."
Â
Of East's 15 strikeouts, 11 were swinging, three were looking, and one came on a foul bunt with two strikes. Her 15 strikeouts are a new program record for a 5-inning game and were just three shy of the 7-inning program record of 18. She previously set a new career high in strikeouts with 13 against the Lobos on Friday, and over her last three games she has 39 strikeouts in 18.2 innings.Â
Â
"I don't try to strike people out," East said. "I'm not a strikeout pitcher and it's really just been working on movement with Coach Cox and lowering my pitches in the zone and that's totally worked to my advantage."
Â
How it Happened
New Mexico's only baserunners came on a leadoff walk in the second inning and a two-out hit-by-pitch in the fourth. The Bulldogs got on the board with three runs in the second inning and took the lead as Rachel Minogue had a leadoff single and scored on a Schuylar Broussard RBI single (watch).
Â
After a wild pitch Dominique Jackson drove in Broussard with a single and she would score on a Miranda Rohleder bunt single and a New Mexico throwing error. In the top of the third Broussard was the fourth Bulldog hitter in the game to get hit by a pitch as the 'Dogs tied the single season MW record for hit-by-pitches.
Â
An inning later, Katie Castellon was hit as the Bulldogs established a new single season MW record with 48 hit-by-pitches this year, topping the previous record of 47 set by San Jose State last season (watch). Rohleder had a leadoff walk in the fourth, stole second, and ended up scoring on a double steal as she came in from third and Castellon stole second.
Â
In the top of the fifth, Fresno State loaded the bases again with one out and Hayleigh Galvan drove in two runs with a double down the left field line (watch). Minogue drove in another run with an infield single (watch), and the Bulldogs moved the game into run-rule range as Vanessa Hernandez hit a 3-run homer to left center, her second straight game with a home run (watch).
Â
Notable
The Bulldogs will play two non-conference games next week at Stanford on Tuesday and at Santa Clara on Wednesday.
