East continues dominance of Stanford in 8-2 Bulldog win

STANFORD, Calif. - Freshman Danielle East beat Stanford for the second time this season, allowing just four hits and two runs, and Fresno State tied its season high with 14 hits in an 8-2 win at Stanford Tuesday night.
After East threw an 8-inning shutout against Stanford earlier this season in Arizona the freshman started Tuesday's game with five scoreless innings. With her no-hitter last Saturday East did not allow a run over 10 straight innings, while offensively Fresno State scored 31 unanswered runs over 13 innings before Stanford scored in the sixth inning on Tuesday. Â
Fresno State (20-15) had eight of its nine starting position players record at least one hit in the game in a balanced offensive attack. Kaitlyn Jennings had a career-high three hits, including her first career triple, and four other Bulldogs had two-hit games. Stanford (20-14) had a 9-4 home record entering the game.
How it Happened
The Bulldogs rattled off four straight hits to score three times in the first. With one away, Katie Castellon, dropped a ball down the right field line for a triple and she would score on a Savannah McHellon single. Hayleigh Galvan then singled add Rachel Minogue doubled down the left field line to bring in both base runners.Â
In the second inning, Dominique Jackson and Miranda Rohleder singled and Katie Castellon drew a walk to load the bases with one away. Stanford got a strikeout before Galvan battled for a walk to force in a run from third. Fresno State made it 5-0 in the third as Vanessa Hernandez had a leadoff double and scored from third on a Jackson groundout.
East held the Cardinal hitless through 3.1 innings before Hannah Howell lined a one-out single up the middle to end East's hitless streak at 8.1 innings dating back to Saturday's no-hitter. East stranded the runner, however, and in the top of the sixth Fresno State scored a pair of two-out runs on RBI singles from McHellon and Galvan.
The Cardinal got a pair of ground ball singles in the bottom of the 6th and with two away Kristina Inouye found space on a fly ball to shallow right field that went for a 2-run triple. The Bulldogs got one run back in the top of the 7th as Hernandez drew a leadoff walk and scored on a triple by Jennings.
In the bottom of the seventh Stanford loaded the bases with a single and two walks but Samantha Mejia got a fielder's choice groundout to end the game.
