Fresno State wins fourth straight match.
SAN JOSE, Calif. – Playing on the road for its second straight conference match, the Fresno State women's tennis team moved to 2-0 in Mountain West play on Friday afternoon with a 4-2 win over San Jose State at the Spartan Tennis Complex. Sophomore Juliane Triebe provided two of the team's points, winning in straight sets in singles and winning her doubles match alongside Alessia Dario.
"We stepped up today," head coach Ryan Stotland said. "It was really fun to see all of the things we have been working on all year come together at the most important time of the year. Winning a tough road match against last year's conference champions was a good testament to what we have been working on. We have a tough match against San Diego State on Tuesday but we look forward to defending our home courts."
The Bulldogs opened up the day by grabbing their third doubles point since the start of March. Dario and Triebe began doubles with a 6-3 win at the No. 2 position, allowing No. 35 Georgia Lawson and Emma Wilson to clinch doubles with a 6-2 defeat of Sybille Gauvain and Savannah Sendar in the No. 1 match. A critical point for the 'Dogs, Fresno State is 3-0 since April 2 when winning doubles.
Laura Malsert evened the dual with a 6-2, 6-4 defeat of Olivia Noble in the first completed singles match of the afternoon at the No. 6 spot. Triebe put the Bulldogs back ahead, ousting Jackie Wagner, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 4 position. The Spartans though brought the match level through the No. 1 match as Gauvain won a tight 6-4, 6-4 match over Wilson.
Ndindi Ndunda put the Bulldogs ahead for good as the sophomore gave the 'Dogs a 3-2 lead, besting Miyo Kobayashi, 6-4, 6-3. Katerina Stloukalova clinched the match with her second win the last week, defeating Tamara Culibrk, 6-3, 7-5, in the No. 2 match.
Next Up:
Fresno State will host its final two conference matches next week against San Diego State (April 17) and UNLV (April 21). Both matches will start at 10 a.m. at Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
