SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Samantha Mejia allowed just one earned run in a complete game victory and five different Bulldogs recorded 2-hit games as Fresno State defeated San Jose State 8-2 on Saturday at Mission College in Santa Clara.
Â
Fresno State (26-15, 9-2 MW) won its ninth consecutive game and extended its lead over San Jose State (25-13, 9-4 MW) atop the Mountain West standings. The Bulldogs have won each of their first four MW series and have outscored their league opponents 77-25.
Â
Making her first start since March 2, Mejia allowed just five singles and improved to 4-0 in MW play with a 0.35 ERA in 20 innings pitched. Miranda Rohleder, Hayleigh Galvan, Rachel Minogue, Vanessa Hernandez, and Dominique Jackson each had two hits on Saturday with Hernandez leading the way with 3 RBIs.
Â
How it Happened
Both teams had just one base runner through the first two innings but the Bulldogs got to SJSU starter Caroline Bowman in the third. Schuylar Broussard and Jackson had consecutive singles to start the inning and, after a sacrifice, Rohleder hit her MW-leading sixth triple of the season to drive in both runners. Katie Castellon followed with a squeeze bunt to bring in Rohleder from third and make it a 3-0 lead.
Â
The 'Dogs got the leadoff hitter aboard in the fourth and scored another run on a two-out double from Jackson. In the fifth, Rohleder had a leadoff single and with two away scored from 2nd on a Galvan single. Minogue and Hernandez followed with singles to plate another run and knock Bowman out of the game.
Â
San Jose State got its first hit in the bottom of the 4th but the runner was quickly erased on a double play. Mejia retired the side in order for the second time in the game in the 5th inning but in the sixth the Spartans got two aboard with a hit and walk and a Bulldog fielding error and scored twice on a Madison Aurin RBI single. With runners on the corners and two out Mejia recorded a big strikeout to end the inning.
Â
The Bulldogs got the two runs right back in the seventh as, all with two away, Galvan doubled, Minogue drew a walk, and Hernandez brought them both in with a double down the left field line. The Spartans had just a single and a walk in the bottom of the 7th as Mejia tallied her first complete game this season.
Â
Notable
Fresno State will look for its second consecutive MW series sweep and 10th straight win overall in the finale against San Jose State at noon Sunday.
