A fifth-inning grand slam by Fresno State redshirt senior Nick Warren broke open a tie game helping the Diamond 'Dogs hang on for a 8-5 win over Saint Mary's on Tuesday night at Bob Bennett Stadium.
With the game tied at 3-3, Warren's first home run of the season and only second of his career narrowly cleared the left-center field wall as the Saugus, Calif., native finished the game driving in a career-best five RBIs.
Fresno State (22-14) continued its recent run of double-digit hit performances as a team collecting 10 hits for their eighth straight game with 10 or more. Warren and Korby Batesole both had two hits apiece while eight other Bulldogs recorded one hit.
Freshman Zach Presno, who got the start behind the plate, hit his fourth double of the season and scored two runs while fellow freshman Miles Tomczak scored a season-high three runs and drew a pair of walks to reach base three times in the game.
On the mound, freshman southpaw Jaime Arias, who got his first start since March 6, stayed perfect on the season improving to 4-0 tossing 5.0 innings allowing four hits, three earned runs and struck five. Freshman right-hander Jamison Hill came in for three innings allowing a pair of runs while notching three strikeouts before Tiegen Jones and Ryan Jensen tag-teamed the ninth as Jensen recored his first career save.
How It Happened
With Clovis native and Buchanan High School graduate Conner Loeprich on the mound for Saint Mary's (19-16), the 'Dogs scored a pair of runs off the Gaels junior right-hander in the second inning as a two-out single back up the middle by Warren (watch) drove in Presno who hit a double down the right-field line.
Junior Zach Ashford, who extended his on-base streak to 38 games, followed Warren with a RBI single to left field (watch) to score Tomczak who reached base drawing a walk.
A infield single by Batesole in the third inning extended the 'Dogs lead to 3-0 as the home team threatened to score more runs loading the bases with no outs, but Saint Mary's relief pitcher Ty Madrigal struck out the next three Bulldogs to limit the damage.
The Gaels rewarded Madrigal for keeping them in the game by tying the score at 3-3 scoring a pair of runs in the fourth on a solo home run by designated Kevin Milam and a single through the right side by second baseman Edward Haus followed by a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning by center fielder Joey Fiske.
The 'Dogs loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth for Warren who worked a 0-2 count before unleashing on a ball (watch) for the 'Dogs first grand slam of the season.
The Gaels answered back with one run apiece in the sixth and seventh innings getting a two-out double by Haus to left-center in the sixth and a solo home run by third baseman Austin Piscotty in the seventh trimmed the 'Dogs lead to 7-5.
A sacrifice bunt by Nolan Dempsey scored Tomczak to give the Bulldogs a key insurance run in the bottom of the eighth for a 8-5 advantage before Jensen retired the two batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth to strand the potential tying-run on deck.
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On Warren's grand slam....
"It was an outside pitch that he got around on it and got it right in the middle of the barrel. He is a big, strong guy now that he is a fifth-year senior and he goes out in batting practice and displays that so it great to see it in a game."
On Arias' outing....
"He goes out and pitches. Four of his five innings were 15 or less pitch innings and going up there and pounds the zone and tells batters good luck with this. When you can locate like that you are dangerous."
On gaining momentum heading to San Diego State this weekend....
"That is what we talked about & what today was really about. Feeling good and moving forward and that performance is exactly what we needed."
