Fresno State turns attention to next week’s MW Championships in Boise.
FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State women's tennis team saw its five-match winning streak snapped on Saturday with a 5-2 defeat to UNLV at Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center. The loss was the Bulldogs' first to a conference opponent in Fresno since the 2010 WAC Championship match.
The Rebels won the first of three doubles matches as Anna Bogoslavets and Juliet Zhang defeated Alessia Dario and Juliane Triebe, 6-2 at the No. 2 position. Olivia Noble and Katerina Stloukalova equalized at 1-1 with their third-straight win together at No. 3. UNLV though took the No. 1 match as Aiwen Zhu and En-Pei Huang upset No. 43 Georgia Lawson and Emma Wilson.
Lawson brought the match level as the sophomore rolled over Juliet Zhang on Court 6 with a 6-1, 6-1 win. The Rebels responded though with three straight-set wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 to clinch the dual match. Zhu made the score 5-1 with a three-set win over Wilson at the No. 1 spot. Triebe earned the Bulldogs' final point of the match as she outlasted Bogoslavets, 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 at No. 4.
"UNLV was the better team today," head coach Ryan Stotland said. "There are some adjustments that we need to make to give us a better chance at winning a conference championship, but I like where we're at. I think we're playing better tennis than we've played all year so I like our chances next week."
