Fresno State to face top-seed UNLV on Sunday at 10 a.m. PT.
BOISE, Idaho – Behind a dominant showing across the board, Fresno State advanced to its third Mountain West Championship match in the last five years with 4-0 defeat of San Jose State on Saturday in the semifinals at Appleton Tennis Center. The Bulldogs are 1-1 in their previous two championship matches since joining the conference.
"The team had great energy from the very start," head coach Ryan Stotland said. "We played very well against the defending champions. It was quite impressive to watch the way that the team focused and competed today, and I feel great going into the championship."
For the second day in a row, Fresno State controlled doubles play. Pushing their record to 6-1 together was Olivia Noble and Katerina Stloukalova at No. 3 as they quickly dispatched Tamara Culibrk and Clara Mantaux, 6-1. No. 44 Georgia Lawson and Emma Wilson gave the 'Dogs the doubles point for the second straight day as the two clinched at No. 1 with a 6-2 defeat of Savannah Sendar and Sybille Gauvain.
Moving up to No. 5 in singles with a change in the lineup, Lawson breezed through her match, posting her first double bagel of the season against Laura Malsert in 42 minutes. While Lawson moved up a spot, Noble replaced her English teammate at the No. 6 position. After getting the better of Mantaux in doubles play, the Bulldog junior did much of the same in singles, scoring the first four points of the match and closed with seven of the final eight to win 6-3, 6-1.
With a dominant win in the quarterfinals, Juliane Triebe followed that up with a 6-2, 6-0 defeat of Miyo Kobayashi. It was the sophomore's 10th in win a row and clinched the Bulldogs' spot in Sunday's championship match against UNLV.
