Fresno State dismantles Concordia on Senior Day, 14-7
4/6/2018 5:39:00 PM | Water Polo
FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State water polo took a 4-0 lead five and a half minutes into Friday afternoon's matchup against conference foe Concordia. The hot start foreshadowed the final result as the 'Dogs went on to cruise to a 14-7 victory over the Eagles.
Callie Woodruff led the way with four goals on 4-of-8 shooting to go along with a drawn exclusion and a field block. Isabella Magno also had a strong game, pouring in a hat trick in addition to three steals and two assists. Natalie Espinoza and Trystyn Vuori also recorded multi-goal games with two scores apiece.
"I was overall pretty happy with the team performance," head coach Natalie Benson said. "I think our warmup, our preparation and our focus has improved throughout the season. The only part of the game I was somewhat unhappy with was the start of the third period. We're learning how to put ourselves in game management positions and we let them score twice right off the bat. So that was the one thing I was a little disappointed with, but overall, happy. Everybody got to hit the water and that's what you want on Senior Day and your last home game."
HOW IT HAPPENED
Fresno State came out of the gates firing as Sydney Coachman, Trystyn Vuori, Callie Woodruff and Isabella Magno all connected on shots within the first five and a half minutes of play to give the Bulldogs a quick 4-0 lead over Concordia. Woodruff poured in her second goal of the contest in between Eagle scores as the 'Dogs owned a 5-2 advantage heading into the second.
Â
Fresno State pulled away from CUI in the second period. The Bulldogs scored the first six goals of the frame, highlighted by Woodruff's third and fourth of the game. Magno and Vuori both tallied their second goals while Natalie Espinoza and Maddie Loggins recorded their first, as the 'Dogs led 11-2 over Concordia with 1:54 remaining in the first half. The Eagles managed to put one into the cage with 28 seconds left to make it an 11-3 game going into the break.
Â
CUI was the aggressor to begin the third period. The Eagles scored two quick goals, credited to Dailynn Santoro and Shannon Graham. But Fresno State would bounce back and score the final two goals of the third. Magno completed the hat trick on a 5-meter penalty opportunity and Espinoza added her second goal of the game to give the Bulldogs a 13-5 lead with one period left to play.
Â
The 'Dogs went into cruise control in the fourth to win by a final score of 14-7 over the Eagles. The victory marked their fifth overall, third at home and second in Golden Coast Conference play.
Â
Hannah Duggins got the start in the cage and had a solid game. The freshman goalie logged eight saves, an assist and a steal in nearly 28 minutes played.
Â
