Â
Fresno State (24-15, 7-2 MW) won its seventh consecutive game and picked up its first series sweep of the season with its highest run total of the year. Utah State (13-22, 3-9 MW) committed two fielding errors in the first inning and the 'Dogs took advantage, sending 12 batters to the plate and opening up a huge early lead.
Â
Bulldog leadoff hitter Miranda Rohleder had two doubles in the first inning, finishing the day 3-for-4 with 3 runs scored while Katie Castellon was 2-for-2 with a triple and four RBIs and Kaitlyn Jennings drove in two runs and scored twice. Danielle East continued to dominate in the circle as well, allowing just two hits and striking out seven over three innings as she is now 4-1 with a 1.95 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 28.2 innings pitched in five MW games.
Â
How it Happened
East was able to strand a runner at third in the top of the first, and in the bottom half Rohleder had a leadoff double to get the offense in motion. The 'Dogs scored their first two runs of the inning on Utah State fielding errors and Schuylar Broussard drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 3-0. Jennings had a two-run single to right (watch), Rohleder drove in two with her second double of the inning (watch), and Castellon singled in Rohleder as the 'Dogs scored eight times on four hits, three walks, and two errors.
Â
The second inning was fairly similar as East was again able to strand two runners in scoring position as she struck out the side (watch). In the home half, Hayleigh Galvan led off with her sixth home run of the season (watch) and the next three Bulldogs reached to load the bases with none out. Dominique Jackson drove in Rachel Minogue with a sacrifice fly and Jennings would be hit by a pitch to reload the bases.
Â
With the bases still loaded and two out, Castellon sliced a triple down the right field line to bring in all three runners (watch), and two batters later she would score on a wild pitch. With the Galvan home run, Castellon's triple, a double from Minogue, and a single from Vanessa Hernandez the 'Dogs hit for the cycle in an inning for the second time this season, having previously done so last Friday at New Mexico.
Â
East completed three scoreless innings to qualify for the win and Savannah Berkowitz allowed just one run over the last two innings of the run-rule shortened game. Utah State got its only run in the top of the fourth with a one-out double followed by an RBI single. The 'Dogs scored their 15th run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI groundout from Hailee Rios, and Berkowitz got a double-play grounder to end the game in the fifth (watch).
Â
Notable
- Fresno State recorded its ninth run-rule win of the season and has now played 17 games this year that were not completed in seven innings.
- During their seven-game winning streak the Bulldogs have outscored their opponents 66-12, averaging 9.4 runs per game and hitting .388 with a 1.50 ERA during the stretch.
- The 15 runs scored on Sunday were the most by the Bulldogs since their 24-8 win over Stanford on Feb. 12, 2017.
- Galvan has now reached base in 20 straight games.
- Fresno State batters were hit by a pitch three times on Sunday, extending their MW single-season record to 52 hit-by-pitches this year. Broussard now leads the team and MW with 9 HBP on the season.
- Head Coach Linda Garza
"Our focus is just one game at a time. That's the only thing we can control. We've found something that we're riding right now. Our job is to find ways to score enough runs and focus on the little things, and as long as we continue to do that I feel like we are going to put ourselves in a competitive place."
Â
On the offense…
"I feel like all weekend we found ways to get the hits when we needed to. Today it was really good to be able to capitalize on some mistakes that they made and be able to continuously put runs on the board. We have a very competitive offense; we have great eyes at the plate and if we can barrel up strikes we can be successful."
Â
On the pitching and defense…
"I think our pitching performances are what are allowing us to stay competitive. They are allowing our offense to find ways to put enough runs on the board to win. I think Dani has done an amazing job as well as Samantha Mejia, and when our bullpen is performing the way that they are it allows us to stay in games. I also think we are one of the top defensive teams in the country and that helps you win games."
Â
On playing at San Jose State next week…
"We've got a great opportunity to go after the team that I think has been playing the most consistent this year. I think it's going to be a great matchup; they have a great pitching staff and they're coming off a conference championship. We're going to focus on us and playing our game and our job is to go in there and win the series."
Â
What's Next
Fresno State and San Jose State (25-11, 9-2 MW) meet next Friday-Sunday in a battle between the top two teams in the MW standings. All three games will start at noon and, due to construction on San Jose State's home field, the series is scheduled to take place at the Mission College softball field in Santa Clara (3000 Mission College Blvd, Santa Clara, CA 95054).
