Nevada takes softball finale in rain-shortened game
5/12/2018 6:08:00 PM | Softball
Â
Due to umpire travel the teams had a pregame agreement that play would not go past 4 p.m., and with the nearly two-hour rain delay the squads completed the fifth inning just before 4 p.m. The first inning had already taken 42 minutes when play was halted, and with the rain delay, 11 combined runs scored, and five different pitchers used the first inning took two hours and 36 minutes to complete.
Â
Junior Kaitlyn Jennings hit her first career home run in the first inning and then went deep again in the second inning to lead Fresno State (31-23, 14-10 MW). Rachel Minogue also homered and had two hits for the Bulldogs while Nevada (25-25, 12-12 MW) scored 10 times on just seven hits as the home team drew 10 walks in five innings.
Â
How it Happened
Jennings hit her first career home run out to right center to give the Bulldogs the lead two batters into the game. Minogue and Hayleigh Galvan followed with singles and Vanessa Hernandez and Savannah McHellon drew walks to push in a second run. Reliever Julia Jensen came in to record the last two outs.
Â
The 'Dogs set down Nevada's leadoff hitter but the next nine batters would reach base. The big blow in the inning was a grand slam off the bat of Lauren Gutierrez as the Wolf Pack had four hits and drew six walks to score eight runs before the rain delay began. Â Â Â
Â
When the game resumed with runners on first and second and two away, Nevada's Amanda Nicholas hit the first pitch for an RBI single to extend the lead to 9-2. The 'Dogs got two runs back in the second behind back-to-back two-out home runs from Jennings (watch) and Minogue (watch).
Â
Samantha Mejia settled things down in the circle for the Bulldogs as she ended up allowing just one unearned run and four hits pitching the last 4.1 innings of the game. Fresno State continued to chip away at the deficit, scoring one run in the third as Haley Fuller delivered an RBI triple (watch) and two runs in the fourth inning on a Jennings hit-by-pitch and two Nevada fielding errors.
Â
Nevada got its tenth run on four walks and a sacrifice fly in the fourth, and Fuller drew a leadoff walk in the fifth but the 'Dogs were unable to close the three-run gap.
