Bulldog doubles team making first NCAA appearance.
FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State's doubles team of Georgia Lawson and Emma Wilson was selected to compete in the NCAA Women's Tennis Doubles Championship, the organization announced Wednesday afternoon. They are the second Bulldog team in the last three years to earn a spot in the doubles championship.
Â
Lawson and Wilson will be the ninth doubles team in Fresno State history to compete in the NCAA Doubles Championship. Entering this season, Bulldog doubles teams have made 13 appearances at NCAAs with three pairs making back-to-back trips, while the team of Melanie Gloria and Tinesta Rowe earned a spot in three straight seasons. Â
Â
The Bulldog pair compiled a 14-11 overall record this season, playing five matches against teams ranked in the top 60 (2-3), while one other match against a ranked opponent went unfinished. The two earned wins over Duke's then-No. 1 ranked team of Samantha Harris and Kelly Chen (6-2) on Jan. 27, and USC's then-No. 49 ranked team of Rianna Valdes and Angela Kulikov (6-3) on Feb. 24.
Â
The 32-team tournament will be contested from May 24-28 at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Fresno State was one of 12 teams to earn an automatic bid into the championship.
Â
Automatic qualification into the Division I doubles championship is awarded to any conference with one or more eligible doubles teams ranked in the ITA Top 60 for eligible/entered doubles teams. For conferences with more than one doubles team within the ITA Top 60 eligible/entered doubles teams, the subcommittee applies the NCAA selection criteria to determine which doubles team is the automatic qualifier from those conferences. All doubles teams must have started a minimum of 10 doubles matches, eight must be completed, with four of the eight matches completed in the spring, in order to be selected as an automatic qualifier or an at-large selection.
