Junior receives program’s first Arthur Ashe award.
TEMPE, Ariz. – Fresno State's Emma Wilson was selected as the ITA Northwest Region's recipient of the 2018 Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship and Leadership Award, the organization announced on Monday. The junior is the first male or female tennis player to earn the regional accolade at Fresno State since the award was established in 1982.
The award takes into account a player's tennis accomplishments, scholastic achievements and extracurricular endeavors, and recognizes players who excelled on and off the court as Ashe did during his life. Sportsmanship, leadership and character are important criteria, as is giving back to the community.
"A big congratulations to Emma on this prestigious award," Fresno State head coach Ryan Stotland said. "She has come so far from her freshman year. This is one of the biggest awards we have in our sport so to receive recognition at this level for what she is doing says it all. There couldn't be a much more deserving individual and we are happy she has grown through sheer hard work on and off the court. She represents what our program is all about."
Wilson combined to win 43 matches this season after recording a career-best 25-15 record in singles play. In doubles, the native of Newcastle, England went 18-16, and was 14-12 alongside Georgia Lawson. The two were ranked throughout the 2018 season by the ITA, and were as high as No. 27 on March 6 after a 22-spot jump. The Bulldog junior was selected to both the All-Mountain West singles and doubles teams for the second straight season.
The ITA will announce its national award winners on Wednesday.
