Lawson and Wilson to face fifth-ranked Bortles and Hartono of Ole Miss in first round.
FRESNO, Calif. – The NCAA released the 2018 Women's Doubles Championship bracket on Tuesday, lining up Fresno State's team of Georgia Lawson and Emma Wilson against Ole Miss' Alexa Bortles and Arianne Hartono who are one of four teams seeded 5-8. First round action begins on Thursday at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
The Bulldog pair compiled a 14-12 overall record this season, playing six matches against teams ranked in the top 60 (2-4), while one other match against a ranked side went unfinished. The two earned wins over Duke's then-No. 1 ranked team of Samantha Harris and Kelly Chen (6-2) on Jan. 27, and USC's then-No. 49 ranked team of Rianna Valdes and Angela Kulikov (6-3) on Feb. 24. Fresno State's top team faced three teams currently in the 32-team field, facing one on two occasions (1-3).
The second Bulldog team in the last three years to earn a spot in the doubles championship, Lawson and Wilson are the ninth doubles team in Fresno State history to compete in the NCAA Doubles Championship. Entering this season, Bulldog doubles teams have made 13 appearances at NCAAs with three pairs making back-to-back trips, while the team of Melanie Gloria and Tinesta Rowe earned a spot in three straight seasons. Â
Lawson and Wilson were ranked as high as No. 27 in the country on March 6, and are No. 50 heading into this week's tournament. Fresno State is one of 12 teams to earn an automatic bid into the championship along with Ole Miss.
The Rebels' duo will be the third top 10 team that the 'Dogs will face this season as Bortles and Hartono are No. 5 in the latest ITA rankings. The two hold a 22-12 record on the year with 10 wins coming against nationally-ranked opponents.
