Bulldogs to host 16 games at the Save Mart Center.
FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State women's basketball program has finalized its schedule for the 2018-19 season, a slate that features one exhibition game, six nonconference games and nine Mountain West games at the Save Mart Center.
Â
Highlighting the nonconference schedule is road trips to a trio of Pac-12 schools in USC (Nov. 28), UCLA (Nov. 7) and Arizona State (Dec. 20). The contest in Tempe is a return trip after the Sun Devils came to Fresno in 2017.
Â
"We're older this year so we're excited to test ourselves early," head coach Jaime White said. "I felt like we did that last year and it paid off in conference as we continued to progress through the season. It's nice to be able to play a USC, UCLA and Arizona State. You have to know how good you're going to be so you have to play some of the better teams in the country, and I think our players get excited for the challenge."
Â
Fresno State will open the 2018-19 season on the road for only the second time in the last six years as the team travels to Northern Arizona on Nov. 6. The 'Dogs return to Fresno on Nov. 14 for their home opener against Cal Poly. Bulldog fans will see a new opponent for the program on Nov. 20 as Fresno State hosts Milwaukee on Nov. 24 before UT Arlington makes the return trip to California during the Thanksgiving weekend (Nov. 23).
Â
Three consecutive road games lead into the Bulldogs' final four contests of December. Fresno State will host three of those final four games heading into conference play with the lone road trip at ASU.
Â
"It's nice to be able to gradually move into the season with a less intense start," White noted. "That's important because we're able to play some returners to see how they're doing, how they come back from the summer and how the new players adjust to the college game. With our preseason the way we've organized it, that may be the case."
Â
The 'Dogs open the conference slate on Jan. 2 with San Jose State at the Save Mart Center.
Â
The Bulldogs' conference schedule sees only one week with back-to-back home games coming at the end of January. After the 'Dogs host Colorado State (Jan. 26) and Wyoming (Jan. 30), they will travel to New Mexico (Feb. 2) and Utah State (Feb. 6) for their only set of consecutive away games.
Â
Fresno State will follow up the road trip by playing both 2018 co-MW regular-season champions, first hosting UNLV on Feb. 9 before traveling to Boise State on Feb. 13. The trip to Boise will be their second contest against the Broncos after hosting them in their fifth game of the conference season on Jan. 19.
Â
As part of the 18-game schedule rotation, the Bulldogs will only play Air Force (road, Feb. 20) and UNLV (home, Feb. 9) once, and the other eight MW teams twice (home and road). The 'Dogs were a combined 3-1 last season against the Falcons and Lady Rebels.
Fresno State will close the regular season at San Jose State on March 7.
This year will feature a change in schedule for the Mountain West Women's Basketball Championship. Unlike the previous Monday-Friday format, the tournament in 2019 will start on Sunday, March 10 and run through Wednesday, March 13 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Bulldogs return all of their primary contributors for a season ago, including All-Mountain West honoree, Candice White, and All-Freshman Team selections Aly Gamez and Maddi Utti. White led league last year in scoring at 18.9 points per game, while ranking in the top 15 in 10 different stat categories during the conference season. Gamez, Utti and White each finished in the top three for the 'Dogs in points, rebounds, assists and steals, with White pacing the team in all four.
