'Dogs chalk 1-0 win over Montana in season opener

MISSOULA, Mont. – The Fresno State women's soccer team opened up the 2018 season with a 1-0 win over Montana in the Montana Cup, Friday night. The Bulldogs sealed in their first win of the season with a lone goal from junior Tori Nicolo.
Fresno State improves to 1-0 on the season, 1-0 on the road.
FIRST HALF
Nicolo, Olivia Muhrbeck, Alyssa Nishikawa, Kayla King, Ele Avery, Melissa Ellis, Maria Gomez, Robyn McCarthy, Emma Chivers and Danielle Pacheco chalked the start for the 'Dogs, with Nicole Theroux in the goal.
Montana struck first with a shot 4:54 into the match, the shot was deflected off the cross bar. Fresno State took its first offensive strike off a corner kick by Nicolo, Muhrbeck's shot was blocked. Ellis recovered the blocked shot to try again, the Grizzly goalie grabbed her first save of the game in the 11th minute.
In the 19th minute, Nishikawa took the second shot on goal with a header. The Montana goalie grabbed another save to keep the 'Dogs scoreless.
The Grizzilies took three consecutive shots, but failed to score, as Theroux recorded her second save of the game in the 24th minute.
At halftime, the score was tied 0-0. Montana recorded more shots (3-6). Fresno State had the advantage in corner kicks (2-0). Both teams recorded two saves in the first half.
SECOND HALF
Goalkeeper Marie Berwinkel-Kottmann checked into the game for Fresno State.
The 'Dogs came out of the huddle with momentum on offense, taking back-to-back corner kicks in the 54th and 65th minutes. Chloe Chedester took her first collegiate shot in the 69th minute, marking the first shot on goal of the half.
The 'Dogs took a 1-0 lead when Nicolo fought for a loose ball in front of the goal, finding the back of the net in the 78th minute.
Montana would take two more shots in the 83rd and 84th minutes to try to even the score, but the 'Dogs played tough defense to solidify their win.
NOTABLE STATS
Fresno State owned the advantage in corner kicks (6-0) and saves (4-3). Montana took more shots in the match (10-6).
Nicolo led the 'Dogs on offense with one goal, on one shot.
