Fresno State falls to Drake, 2-1

MISSOULA, Mont. – The Fresno State women's soccer team fell to Drake 2-1 in its final match of the Montana Cup, Sunday morning. The 'Dogs were led by junior Tori Nicolo, scoring her second goal of the season.
Fresno State falls to 1-1 on the season, 0-1 in neutral site matches.
FIRST HALF
Nicolo, Olivia Muhrbeck, Megan Amick, Alyssa Nishikawa, Kayla King, Ele Avery, Melissa Ellis, Maria Gomez, Robyn McCarthy and Emma Chivers logged the start for Fresno State, with Nicole Theroux in the goal.
Fresno State scored on its first shot of the game, when Nicolo scored off a cross from Ellis in the fourth minute, taking a 1-0 lead.
Drake quickly responded with a goal in the 11th minute, Sam Nosler scored unassisted off a turnover from the top of the box, evening the score 1-1. Two minutes after its first goal, Drake scored in the 13th minutes to take a 2-1 lead.
Both offenses kept firing, but there wouldn't be a shot on goal for the remainder of the half.
At halftime, Drake had a 2-1 lead. Drake owned the advantage in shots (5-4). Fresno State recorded more corner kicks (4-3). Neither team recorded a save in the first half.
SECOND HALF
Marie Berwinkel-Kottmann entered the game as goalkeeper for Fresno Stare at the start of the second half.
Fresno State was in command on offense at the beginning of the second half, taking six corner kicks in the first 11 minutes. Fresno State had three opportunities to even the score, Kasidee Wiley took all three corner kicks and connected with a teammate for a shot, all three shots were blocked by the Drake defense.
Drake took its first shot on goal in the 59th minute, Berwinkel-Kottmann logged her first save of the match. Ellis attempted to even the score with a shot in the 64th minute, but the Drake goalie was there for the save.
Both teams played tough defense through the last stretch of the second half.
Fresno State's offense went full force in the last three minutes of the match, taking three corner kicks and three shots on goal. Chloe Chedester made the last attempt for Fresno State with a header off a corner kick from Wiley, but the Drake goalie held her ground in the 90th minute.

Fresno State returns home to host Sacramento State on Friday, August 24 at 7 p.m. PT in the Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium.
