SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Fresno State women's tennis team was in action for the first time this season over the weekend as freshman Jennifer Timotin and sophomore Alessia Dario began competing in the 10th annual Battle in the Bay Classic in San Francisco, Calif., hosted by the University of San Francisco. The 'Dogs managed to take home four wins over the course of the weekend.
Â
Timotin and Dario were paired together in doubles play as the No. 2 seed to start off the tournament on Friday, but were defeated by the No. 7-seeded duo of Pacific's Anneroos Nederstigt and USC's Danielle Wilson 8-2. As doubles competition was played in single elimination format, the tandem was eliminated from the bracket.
Â
The 'Dogs enjoyed a bit more success in singles as Timotin, ranked as the No. 1 singles seed of the tournament, was able to take care of Pacific's No. 16 seed Georgia Townsend, winning her match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. The Dublin, Ireland, native's official tournament run was then brought to an end on Saturday, however, after being defeated by San Francisco's No. 9 seed, Mya Bui, 6-3, 6-3.
Â
Dario was marked as the No. 6 seed of the singles bracket, but was taken down by San Francisco's No. 11 seed, Emily Maxfield, 6-3, 6-0. After dropping into the consolation bracket, the Francenigo, Italy, native was eliminated by Santa Clara's No. 14 seed, Katya Tabachnik, 6-2, 6-4 on Saturday.
Â
Despite being knocked out of the original tournament format, the 'Dogs were able to bounce back with a perfect run of consolation matches on Sunday. Timotin and Dario teamed up again in doubles to overpower the No. 3-seeded pair of Maria Gonzalez and Jenna Dorian of Sacramento State 8-2.
Â
Fresno State carried that momentum into singles, claiming both matches with consistent control. Timotin first knocked off No. 7 seed Maria Gonzalez of Sacramento State 6-3, 6-1. Dario soon followed with a 6-3, 6-4 win over No. 8 seed Jenna Dorian of Sacramento State to conclude the 'Dogs' action for the weekend.
Â
Fresno State's next action will be participating in the Cal Nike Invitational starting Friday, Sept. 28, at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts in Berkley, Calif. Admission is free and information on how to follow the action will be provided on a later date.
