'Dogs earn win over UT-Martin at Willis Invitational

WACO, Texas - The No.8 Fresno State equestrian team kicked off the Willis Invitational with an 8-7 victory over UT-Martin on Friday morning but fell to Delaware State and No. 7 Baylor on Saturday. The Bulldogs dropped their competition to Delaware State with a 9-6 final score and fell to No. 7 Baylor, 11-4.

Over the weekend, the 'Dogs earned three Most Outstanding Player accolades. Redshirt sophomore Nicole Campbell earned the first in Horsemanship when she outscored her UT-Martin opponent, 76-74. Campbell picked up her second honor in a 71-68.5 Horsemanship ride over Delaware State. Senior Alexandra Dirickson picked up the third MOP honor for the 'Dogs with a team-best 83-75 ride against Delaware State.

'Dogs vs. UT-Martin
Fresno State and UT-Martin tied 2-2 in Equitation Over Fences to start the morning. Freshman Hana Bieling defeated 2018 NCEA Equitation Over Fences Second-Team All-American Abbie Hopkins 73-70 in the first point for Fresno State. The second Bulldog point came from senior Alex Dirickson earning a 68-66 point over her opponent.

Fresno State pulled ahead in Reining with a 2-1 victory in the arena to hold a 4-3 advantage at the intermission. Junior Paige Barton outscored her opponent 68.5-64 and freshman Lexee Padrick edged her opponent 68.5-68 for the second Bulldog point. Junior Shea Gilson tied in her ride with a 61.

For the second half of events, Fresno State and UT-Martin faced off in Equitation on the Flat and Horsemanship.

UT-Martin topped Fresno State in Equitation on the Flat, 3-1. The lone Bulldog point came from senior Brooke Nelson who defeated Lindsay Anderson, 63-59.

The Bulldogs fought back with their best performance of the contest in Horsemanship with a 3-1 victory to seal the team win. Senior Taeya Harle, redshirt sophomore Nicole Campbell and freshman Kameron Thorn each earned their horsemanship points against UTM. Campbell shined in the arena with a team-best 76 to her opponent's 74. Campbell's ride was enough to earn her the Most Outstanding Player accolade in the Horsemanship.

'Dogs vs. Delaware State
Fresno State faced off with Delaware State in Equitation on the Flat and Reining to cap off day one of the Willis Invitational. The teams remained tied, 4-4, through the two.

The 'Dogs outscored the Hornets in the Flat, 3-1. Fresno State's points came from freshman Grace Countryman, and seniors Alexandra Dirickson and Brooke Nelson. Fresno State's three points in the Flat were the most earned by the 'Dogs in the event since facing Delaware State at the Masterson Farms Invitational on Nov. 10, 2017.

The Hornets evened the score after a decisive 3-1 performance in Reining. Fresno State's lone point was earned by junior Paige Barton in a 69-68 ride.

On Saturday, the 'Dogs and Hornets completed their rides in Equitation Over Fences and Horsemanship. Delaware State took the Fences event, 3-1. Dirickson earned the sole Bulldog point of the event with an event-best 83-75 ride over Sydney Wicklund. Dirickson's ride earned her the MOP honors for the Fences.

Delaware State capped the win with a 2-1 victory in Horsemanship. Campbell earned the solo Bulldog point with a 71-68.5 ride over Samantha Elliott. Hannah Buijs tied in her ride with a 72.

'Dogs vs. No.7 Baylor
Fresno State opened up with a 3-1 victory in Equitation Over Fences for the first event against Baylor. Beiling, Rosinski and Dirickson earned the three consecutive Bulldog points in the event.

The 'Dogs and Bears faced off in Horsemanship and Equitation on the Flat where the Bears swept both events, 4-0.

For the final event of the Willis Invitational, the 'Dogs and Bears went head-to-head in Reining. Padrick tied in the first ride of the event and Gustafson picked up the final point in a 69-67 ride over Maggie Cincotta. Baylor took the event 2-1 for a 11-4 team win.
