FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State women's soccer team defeated San Diego State 2-1, marking Fresno State's first win over San Diego State since 2000. The victory came behind a relentless offensive effort from midfielder Emma Chivers, who scored a career-high two goals. The Bulldogs earned their first Mountain West win of the season, and handed the Aztecs their first conference loss of the season.
"This win validates the way we've been playing," said head coach Brian Zwaschka. "This win rewards our players for staying the path and continuing to work. Our effort and energy this weekend was awesome, and we were happy to be playing at home this weekend. All conference wins matter when it comes to getting to the postseason, and this win couldn't have come at a better time.
Fresno State improves to 2-8-2 (1-2-1 MW) this season.
Chivers, Tori Nicolo, Chloe Chedester, Megan Amick, Alyssa Nishikawa, Ele Avery, Maria Gomez, Robyn McCarthy, Danielle Pacheco and Kayla Calmes led the charge for the 'Dogs, with Nicole Theroux in goal.
Fresno State started with the momentum, SDSU took the first shot of the match, but the 'Dogs followed with five consecutive shots over a 10 minute span. Fresno State had a nice look in the 33rd minute when Danya Gutierrez found an open header off a cross, but the SDSU goalie got a hand on it for the save.
The 'Dogs took a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute, when Chivers managed to get control of pass inside the box. Avery and Gutierrez teamed up on the assist.
Fresno State took its 1-0 lead into halftime. This was the second consecutive game that the 'Dogs owned the advantage in shots during the first half (10-4).
The teams started the second half exchanging shots, but the Aztecs weren't going to go down without a fight. SDSU scored the equalizing goal in the 64th minute. With countless players in the box fighting for possession, Phoebe Leitch managed to hit the ball off her chest into the goal.
The Aztecs were on the war path to earn the advantage, but Theroux grabbed three saves in just six minutes to keep the score even.
Fresno State regained possession and started its offensive strike with a corner kick from Nicolo in the 86th minute. Chedester got a foot on the ball and lobbed it into the box. Chivers fought through the crowded goal box to head the ball into the back of the net in the 87th minute.
The 'Dogs fought to keep possession during the last three minutes to run the clock, sealing in their first home win of the season.
