SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Fresno State swimming & diving team returns to action this week with a pair of dual meets in San Diego looking to extend their four-meet winning streak.
Â
The 'Dogs face San Diego State at 10 a.m. on Friday before battling the University of San Diego at 10 a.m. on Saturday in their final road duals of the regular season. Fresno State has been training in San Diego all week as they return to competition following the winter break.
Â
The Bulldogs have not competed since Dec. 8 when they earned a 155.5-125.5 win at CSU Bakersfield, the team's fourth consecutive dual win. Senior Kelli Funk won both diving competitions and Ugne Mazutaityte and Manuela Mendolicchio each won two swimming events as Fresno State improved to 4-1 in dual meets this year.
Â
Fresno State also has dual wins this year over Pacific, Fresno Pacific, and Pomona-Pitzer and closes the regular season with four dual meets leading up to the MW Championship, which begins on Feb. 20 in Minneapolis. Two of those meets, against San Diego State and San Jose State, will be direct competition against conference opponents prior to the league meet.
Â
The Aztecs have finished in the top three in the MW Championship in each of the last three seasons, including a second place finish last year. The Bulldogs hosted SDSU earlier this year in the Chick-Fil-A Invitational, in which the Aztecs placed second out of six teams behind only Cal. San Diego State is 10-0 in dual meets this year, most recently defeating both Oregon State and Incarnate Word on New Year's Eve.
Â
San Diego has been busy already in 2019, defeating Dixie State but losing to Nevada and San Jose State on Jan. 5 then losing against UCLA and Harvard on Jan. 7. The 'Dogs and Toreros faced off in the UNLV Invitational in late November with Fresno State finishing tied for second and USD finishing eighth in a field of nine teams. Fresno State earned a 167-104 dual win at San Diego last Jan. 13 in which the Bulldog swimmers had a 167-78 advantage and USD earned all of the diving points as the Bulldog divers were competing elsewhere. The 'Dogs will be competing at San Diego for the fourth consecutive year.
Â
Schedule Update
Fresno State's final regular season meet vs. San Jose State on Feb. 2 has been moved to the Fresno State Aquatics Center. The meet was scheduled to take place in San Jose but the Spartans' new pool will not be completed in time. The 'Dogs will still hold their Senior Day ceremony when they host UC Davis on Jan. 19 before closing the regular season hosting San Jose State on Feb. 2 at 12 p.m.
