BERKELEY, Calif. – The Fresno State women's tennis team concluded play in its first tournament of the spring season, the Cal Winter Invitational, hosted by Cal at the Hellman Tennis Courts and the Channing Tennis Complex in Berkeley, Calif., on Sunday. Fresno State picked up seven individual wins over the course of the weekend as six different Bulldogs, five of them being freshman, were able to compete and gain experience with the first dual match less than two weeks away.
The 'Dogs had a rough go to open the tournament, being swept by a Cal lineup that featured three players in the ITA top 60 in singles, with the highest being No. 35 Olivia Hauger. Freshman A.C. Hummel forced the first set against Hauger into a tiebreaker set before eventually falling on court two, 7-6 (0), 6-1. Fellow freshman Jennifer Timotin took the first set from No. 57 Anna Bright before later dropping the match on court three, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Freshman Ella Husrefovic came up short on court one against No. 47 Julia Rosenqvist, 6-1, 6-0, while remaining freshmen Deniza Marcinkevica and Jane Ellis lost on courts five and six, respectively.
Fresno State bounced back in doubles against Cal Poly, taking two out of three matches. Husrefovic and Timotin teamed up to take down the pair of Kimberley Bhunu and Emily Louie-Meadors on court one, 6-4. The tandem of Georgia Lawson and Marcinkevica then took care of Grace Olyphant and Emily Ackerman on court two, 6-2. The remaining Bulldog duo of Hummel and Ellis dropped its contest to Claire Bouquet and Caroline Williams on court three, 6-2.
Day two proved to mirror the results of day one as the 'Dogs faced similar adversity while taking on Saint Mary's in singles. Timotin was a bright spot as she took down Hind Abdelouahid on court one, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5. Saint Mary's came out on top throughout the rest of the lineup as Husrefovic, Hummel, Marcinkevica and Ellis each fell in two sets. In doubles, Cal, fielding the No. 17 doubles tandem in the nation, continued to show its strength, winning each of the three contests.
Fresno State rebounded on day three to generate more success, earning four wins on the day. In singles against Cal Poly, Marcinkevica earned her first collegiate singles win since arriving in the Valley, coming back from a set down against Emily Louie-Meadors on court two to win, 2-6, 7-5, 7-5. Cal Poly took the remaining three matches in two sets.
Doubles competition was where the 'Dogs shined on the final day of the tournament, sweeping the competition from Saint Mary's. Lawson and Timotin teamed up for the first time to take down Hind Abdelouahid and Liesl Pieters on court one, 6-4. The pair of Hummel and Ellis followed shortly after with the same tally, defeating Jordan Harris and Chloe Goyette on court three, 6-4. Husrefovic and Marcinkevica wrapped thing up for the Bulldogs, earning a 7-5 victory over Clementine Clement and Aubane Ville on court two.
Fresno State will be back in action next week, heading to the Titan Courts in Fullerton, Calif., to compete in the CSUF Spring Invitational Friday through Sunday. The first dual action for the 'Dogs will begin the subsequent week as they take on Stanislaus State on Jan. 25 at home at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
