AUGUSTA, Ga. – Sophomore Brigitte Thibault, of the Fresno State women's golf team, accepted an invitation to compete at the inaugural Augusta National Women's Amateur, which will be held April 3-6 in Augusta, Ga.
"This is surreal," said Thibault. "To be the first ever Canadian Woman to play at the Augusta National Women's Amateur, and to rise the Bulldog name up to that standard, is a pretty special feeling to have and something I'll cherish forever."
The Augusta National Women's Amateur was first announced on April 4, 2018, by Fred Ridley, Chairman of Augusta National Golf Club, during his annual press conference at the Masters Tournament.
An international field of 72 women amateurs were selected to compete in 54 holes of stroke play. The first two rounds, 18 holes per day, will take place at the Champions Retreat Golf Club in Augusta, Ga., April 3-4. The leading 30 players will advance to the final round that is set to be played at Augusta National Golf Club on April 6. As a consolation, regardless of the cut line, the entire field will be invited to play Augusta National on April 5.
Thibault, who hails from Rosemère, Quebec, earned the invitation as the current No. 1 ranked women's amateur golfer in Canada. She is ranked 221st internationally and was the only Canadian to receive an invitation to Augusta.
The Fresno State sophomore carded a 72.00 average score over 12 rounds in four tournaments this past fall. To close out the fall semester, Thibault posted a runner-up finish at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown, Oct. 21-23, with an 11-under-par 205 (69-70-66), just two strokes behind the individual medalist. Thibault's three round total (205) was enough to tie the all-time lowest three round score in program history set back during the 2006-07 season.
In just 14 career tournaments as a Bulldog, Thibault has nine top 25 finishes, and five top 10's.
Provided the winning individual remain an amateur, the 2019 Augusta National Women's Amateur Champion will receive an invitation to the next five Augusta National Women's Amateurs, the 2019 U.S. Women's Open, the 2019 Women's British Open, and any USGA, R&A and PGA of America amateur championships for which she is eligible for one year.
NBC Sports will produce and broadcast three hours of live final-round coverage of the Augusta National Women's Amateur at Augusta National from 9 a.m.-Noon PT on April 6. The Masters, 2019 PGA Event, will take place April 11-14.
