FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State women's tennis team closed out a perfect weekend to start the season off 2-0 with a 4-2 win over Pacific at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center on Sunday. The 'Dogs fell in doubles, but bounced back in singles to snag the win.
Â
"It was an absolutely great experience for this group to be in a tough and gritty match like that this early in the season," said coach Ric Mortera. "Having Georgia (Lawson) back was a big boost. For her to clinch the match the way she did, we could not be happier for her."
Â
DOUBLES
Pacific came out firing in doubles. Jacquie Tan and Dohee Lee of Pacific claimed the first doubles match with a 6-2 win over Fresno State's freshman pair of Deniza Marcinkevica and Jane Ellis on court two. Pacific's duo of Anneroos Nederstigt and Maya Lopez followed that with a 6-4 win over Fresno State's Jennifer Timotin and Georgia Lawson on court one to clinch the point.
Â
The remaining match pitting Fresno State's freshman tandem of A.C. Hummel and Shir Azran against Pacific's Iona Popescu and Karina Vyrlanon on court three concluded unfinished.
Â
SINGLES
Pacific opened singles on the right foot, taking the first match and a 2-0 lead as Anneroos Nederstigt defeated Fresno State's Deniza Marcinkevica on court two, 6-0, 6-1.
Â
Fresno State turned things around after that, winning four straight sets. Azran got things started for the 'Dogs in the first match of her career, dominating Pacific's Anna Ramos Vinolas, 6-0, 6-4. Timotin evened the score and furthered her success at the one spot shortly after, knocking off Pacific's Lee, 6-2, 6-2.
Â
Some time passed as the remaining competitors battled back and forth, but Hummel was the next 'Dog to claim victory, putting the 'Dogs up 3-2 by dropping Pacific's Vyrlan on court five, 6-2, 6-4. Soon after, Lawson secured the match with a 7-5, 7-6, win over Pacific's Lopez on court four. With the match decided at 4-2 in favor of Fresno State, Ella Husrefovic and Pacific's Tan did not complete their match.
Â
UP NEXT
The 'Dogs (2-0) will be back in action next Saturday at noon P.T. as they take on Saint Mary's (0-0) in a neutral-site game in Eugene, Ore., at the Student Tennis Center. Coverage and admission information will be released on a later date.
