Fresno State’s Tommy Stephenson is the second golfer in program history to card multiple career rounds of 64 or better with an impressive final round at Meadow Club. The other player: Nick Watney.
FAIRFAX, Calif. --- Fresno State sophomore Tommy Stephenson went low with a 64 on the final day of the 2019 MacKenzie Alister Invitational at Meadow Club in Northern California.
Stephenson was one of two golfers in the 84-man field to shoot the lowest round of the day with the 7-under 64, which included seven birdies and an eagle in the first 10 holes of his day and a sizzling 29 coming in before making the turn to the front nine on the historic 6,734-yard Meadow Club course.
For Stephenson, this was the second time in his Bulldog career that he has shot a 64 or better in competition – two strokes off tying his own school record of 62, which he carded this past April 1 in the second round of the SeattleU Redhawk Invitational at Chambers Bay.
In total, Stephenson's 64 is the 11th single round of 64 or better in program history.
The low round also puts Stephenson in a very exclusive club as former Fresno State All-American and current PGA Tour star Nick Watney is the only other player in program history to record multiple career rounds of 64 or better. Watney had three rounds of 64 or better in back-to-back seasons (two in 2001-02 and one in 2002-03) during his days at Fresno State.
Cliff earns second Top 10 finish
Fresno State junior Michael Cliff had another strong showing for the Bulldogs out of the No. 1 position with his second Top 10 finish of the season and has been in the Top 20 in each of the first three tournaments this season.
Cliff shot 8-under-par to tie for 10th during the two-day affair, finishing eight strokes back of individual champion Sahith Theegala of Pepperdine. Stephenson was also in the Top 30 at 3-under-par for a tie for 29th. As a team, Fresno State finished 13th in the 15-team three-round event.
Fresno State's next tournament this fall will be in two weeks from Oct. 21-23 when the Bulldogs travel to play in Stockton at The Reserve.
