Fresno State junior guard Mustafa Lawrence drained the game-winning 3-pointer as time expired to seal the Bulldogs’ thrilling 77-74 victory over the Winthrop Eagles.
FRESNO, Calif. – With Paul George sitting courtside, the Fresno State men's basketball team rallied for a thrilling 77-74 buzzer-beating win over the Winthrop Eagles on Sunday afternoon at the Save Mart Center.
Â
Fresno State (1-1) used big nights by two of its newcomers – Jarred Hyder and Mustafa Lawrence – to shoot its way past Winthrop (1-1).
Â
Hyder finished with a game-high 26 points, including five 3-pointers, and Lawrence called ball game when he took a pass from Hyder in the final seconds and drained the game-winning 3-pointer as time expired.
Â
This was the Bulldogs' first win on a shot at the buzzer since Allen Huddleston's game-winning halfcourt 3-pointer to win in overtime at UC Irvine 98-97 in 2013.
Fresno State senior forward Nate Grimes added 15 points and 15 rebounds for his first double-double of the season (24th of his career).
How it happened: Neither team led by double digits in a competitive game that featured some big runs by both squads.
With Winthrop leading 30-24 late in the first half, Fresno State answered by going on an 11-0 run to close the first half and take a 35-30 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Eagles responded early in the second half with a 16-0 run to move back in front at 46-38 with just over 12 minutes remaining in the contest. Â
The Bulldogs retook the lead at 71-69 courtesy of a 21-10 surge over a five-plus minute stretch.
Before Lawrence's buzzer-beater 3-pointer, Hyder had given Fresno State the lead at 74-71 on a 3-pointer of his own with 17 seconds left, only to be matched by Winthrop's Hunter Hale converting a contested 3-pointer with just 4.9 seconds on the clock.
Fresno State's Aguir Agau inbounded the ball to Hyder, who pushed the ball quickly up the court and found Lawrence on the right wing for the game-winner.
The Bulldogs outrebounded (38-29) and outshot (48.1 percent to 44.4 percent) the Eagles, including a blistering 8-for-11 clip (72.7 percent) from beyond the 3-point line in the second half. Fresno State made its final eight shots.

On the win...
"You didn't know what was going to happen coming into a game with eight new guys and five freshmen and a starting guard out, playing a really good team, that runs hard stuff to guard, that spreads you out, five out, and can play a big guy inside. What you can bank on is to play hard and play together. Try to stay emotionally stable, move into the next play, see if the coaching staff can help you in any way with adjustments. To have guys step up like they did was not a surprise, but it was very optimistic for our future. We've got another tough game coming up here in a couple days, no rest, but especially these two young men here (Hyder and Lawrence), the way Nate rebounded the ball and had some big shots, Anthony Holland had some big shots—for them to get comfortable into the game and have some some poise to say, 'Okay, it's my time to take this shot, and this is my strength,' that's what we've been looking for. And you can't get that until you get game experience."
On his team's confidence level...
"Confidence has to be earned, and I think some guys are going to gain some confidence from this. We'll look at the things we did good. We'll go back and try to correct some of the things we didn't do so well, and it will hit home now. We'll build some real confidence in our team. That's what the pre-season is going to be about with eight new guys and five freshmen. This is what it's going to be about. We're going to learn on the fly out there. We talk about crockpot all the time—it's going to take a while. But what we're not going to take a while doing is playing hard and playing together."
On Jarred Hyder and Mustafa Lawrence...
"I think they're giving me a little too much. I've been hard on these two young men [Jarred & Dot] early to try and prepare them for what's going on, but I always tell them we believe in them as a whole staff. Their resolve, their toughness, their belief in themselves really showed tonight. We're trying to teach and get better, but at the same time their toughness and their resolve came from within and it was big time. Parachute opened tonight."
On his team's approach...
"We did battle for 40 minutes. When you're a young team you take two steps forward, but you always take one step back. As a coach you have to start to understand that. Just because we did two steps forward doesn't mean we got it yet. We took a lot of bad shots at Oregon. We thought we played hard enough defensively to stay in the game and we came back in the game when we started taking better shots. I think if you saw tonight, our first ten minutes were the same shots. So I couldn't get guys in and out of there quicker to prove our point that we're going to make an extra pass, and we're going to get into the paint first. And we learned from that tonight. So let's make sure we come out Tuesday and we don't start back that way."
On the Red Wave...
"I'm proud of Fresno. Bakersfield and Fresno are very similar. It's all the Valley. I've played a lot of high school games in this area, I've coached a lot of high school games in this area. I've watched a lot of Fresno State basketball games, either from the other side of the bench or as a little kid. So if you can have the hometown advantage here—that's a start. If we can get more people out and have a home court advantage like that, it's just going to help us because our conference has a lot of home court advantage."
