2/12/2019 11:13:00 AM | Women's Basketball
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced today that Candice White is among 10 candidates for the 2019 Ann Meyers Drysdale Award. Named after the first player, male or female, named to the All-America Team in four straight college seasons, the annual award in its second year recognizes the top shooting guard in women's NCAA Division I college basketball.
Â
"When identifying our Naismith Starting 5, we are grateful to have insights from legends of the game, such as Ann Meyers Drysdale," said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame. "The ten young women considered as candidates from the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award should feel very proud to be in such tremendous company."
Â
Selected to the 2018-19 Preseason All-Mountain West Team, White has lived up to the billing, leading the league in scoring for the second straight year, currently at 18.8 points per game. The senior from Modesto, California also ranks in the top 10 in the MW in field goal percentage (47.1), free throw percentage (81.3), steals (1.6 spg), 3-point percentage (36.4), and 3-pointers made per game (2.3), while also ranking 16th in rebounding (5.0 rpg).
Â
During the last week, she became the sixth player in Fresno State history to eclipse 1,500 career points, and moved into fifth on the all-time scoring list with 1,520 points.
Â
A 2018 All-Mountain West selection, White led the league in scoring at 18.9 points per game last season. White became just the second Bulldog in program history to eclipse 600 points in a season (605) as she became the fifth-fastest player in program history to reach 1,000 career points. She joined the 1,000-point club by scoring 1,094 of her 1,107 points across her sophomore and junior seasons. Not just a scorer, the senior was the only player in the league during the 2017-18 conference season to rank in the top 15 in points, rebounds, assists, steals, free-throw percentage, 3-point field goal percentage, 3-point field goals made per game, defensive rebounds and minutes.
Â
Throughout the first half of the 2017-18 season, White converted on her first 64 free-throw attempts, which dating back to the 2016-17 season gave her 68 straight which ranks No. 2 all-time in NCAA Division I history, two shy of the all-time mark of 70, and fifth-longest across all division.
Â
The winner of the 2019 Ann Meyers Drysdale Award will be revealed on an ESPN platform during the 2019 Women's Final Four in Tampa, Florida. Additional awards being presented and recognized at the WBCA Convention include the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard Award, the Cheryl Miller Small Forward Award, the Katrina McClain Power Forward Award, and the Lisa Leslie Center Award. Also being awarded is the Wade Trophy, the sport's oldest and most prestigious national player of the year award which is presented annually by the WBCA's community of coaches to the best player in college women's basketball.
Â
Last season, Victoria Vivians of Mississippi State was named the inaugural winner of the Ann Meyers Drysdale Shooting Guard of the Year Award.
