LAS VEGAS – The Fresno State women's lacrosse team moved to 2-0 on the season for the second time in program history on Friday, hanging on to defeat Pac-12 opponent Cal, 15-14, in a neutral-site game at Canyon Springs High School in Las Vegas. Senior attacker Ryleigh Bone caught fire near the end of the first half and beginning of the second, firing four goals in just over five minutes and compiling six total to lead the Bulldogs' scoring efforts and place tied for second in single-game goals in Fresno State history. Junior goalkeeper Laurel Maunder anchored the Fresno State defense from the net, making 12 saves and scooping five ground balls.
"We had a fun time and worked diligently as a team tonight," said coach Jessica Giglio. "My favorite part of coaching this team is its grit, determination and passion for lacrosse."
Bone, Kayla Galet, Tiffiny Wallace, Jordyn Pandolfo, Marina Mayo, Abbigayle Roberts, Sydney Skalstad, Kayle Kaesbauer, Hannah Krats, Olivia Mannon, and Alex Romanowski lined up as starters for Fresno State, with Maunder protecting the net.
FIRST HALF
Cal got off to a hot start, finding the back of the net before a minute of game time had passed and adding two more in the next five minutes to take an early, 3-0 lead. Minutes later, Wallace answered with a goal of her own to get the 'Dogs on the board. Bone got going soon after, driving home her first goal of the night to cut the Bears' lead to one.
With the first 10 minutes of the half down, Cal extended its lead to 4-2 by adding another goal. Fresno State then responded by evening the score with a pair of goals to follow. Mayo fired her first goal of the night to cut the deficit to one, and Bone scored her second goal of the night to square things up.
The two squads continued to trade blows as Cal added three more goals, but Fresno State had an answer for each to keep the score tied at seven. Skalstad scored the first response on a free position shot, and Wallace pitched in her second goal of the night to follow. Bone then knotted things up and began her streak by notching her first hat trick of the season. Bone closed out the first half by adding two more, giving the 'Dogs a 9-7 lead at halftime.
SECOND HALF
Bone picked up right where she left off to start the second half, drilling in her fourth consecutive goal and seventh on the season just 20 seconds into the second half, putting the Bulldogs up by three. Cal didn't bow out though, answering with a pair of goals shortly after.
Senior attacker Emily Miller gave Fresno State some breathing room with her first goal of the season minutes later, and Mayo fired in another goal to further distance the 'Dogs from the Bears. Again, Cal fought back with by scoring a pair of goals to cut Fresno State's lead to one yet again.
As Cal drew near, Galet scored her first goal of the night to put the 'Dogs up, 13-11. That wouldn't be enough to down the Bears as they found the back of the net twice to tie things up at 13 with just over 13 minutes remaining.
Fresno State took the lead once again after Marina Mayo scorched in a free position shot for her fifth goal of the season, but Cal added another goal with 9:25 left on the clock to tie the score.
Dawson Chalifoux was the next Bulldog to score, firing in her third goal of the season less than 20 seconds after Cal's previous goal to put Fresno State ahead, 15-14. That goal would prove to seal the match as after 29 goals were scored in the previous 51 minutes, the 'Dogs battened down the hatches and stifled the Bears offense for the rest of the game.
NOTABLE STATS
Both teams bordered on even in most stats, but Fresno State's biggest team advantages came in clears with two more than Cal and saves with four more than the Bears.
Bone achieved a career high in goals with a double hat trick and points with seven, also tying for the second most goals in a single game in Fresno State history. Mayo added her first hat trick of the season, while Maunder recorded 10+ saves for the first time this season with 12 on the game to go with five ground balls.
WHAT'S NEXT
Fresno State will stay in Las Vegas to take on Oregon in another neutral-site game at 11 a.m. on Sunday at Canyon Springs High School.
