‘Dogs fall to Ducks at Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. – The Fresno State women's tennis team came up short against Oregon on Sunday, falling to the Ducks, 4-1, in Eugene, Ore. In a back and forth match, the 'Dogs made a late push in singles, but ultimately fell to drop to an even 2-2 on the season.
"I am proud of the way the group battled against a tough Oregon team," said coach Ric Mortera. "It is experiences like this past weekend that will help mold us into a great team down the road."
DOUBLES
Both squads came out swinging in doubles. Shweta Sangwan and Rifanty Kahfiani took the first doubles match for the Ducks with a 6-1 win over Fresno State's tandem of Georgia Lawson and Jennifer Timotin on court one. Fresno State soon responded with a 6-3 win on court three from the duo of A.C. Hummel and Janie Ellis over Oregon's Taryn Fujimori and Allison Mulville. Later, Paiton Wagner and Daniela Nasser clinched the point for the Ducks with a 6-2 win over Fresno State's tandem of Deniza Marcinkevica and Ella Husrefovic on court two.
SINGLES
The two sides continued to battle in singles. Wagner got the Ducks off to a 2-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-0, win over Lawson on court four. Kahfiani then put Oregon within a point of sealing the match with a 6-0, 6-1, win over Husrefovic on court three. Despite the 3-0 deficit, Ellis gave the 'Dogs hope with a 6-2, 6-3, win over Fujimori on court six. Fresno State's comeback bid would end there as Nasser, the No. 50 ranked singles player in the country, took down Husrefovic on court two, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. The remaining two matches concluded unfinished with Oregon clinching the victory, 4-1.
UP NEXT
The 'Dogs will be back in action next week as they travel north to the Bay Area. Fresno State will first visit San Francisco, Calif., to take on the Dons at 2 p.m. PT on Feb. 9. They will then make the short drive to Santa Clara, Calif., to face the Broncos at 2 p.m. PT on Feb. 10.
