FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State completed a perfect week of games at the Fresno State Invitational, finishing the tournament with a 6-0 record after a 6-0 win over Santa Clara and a 5-3 victory over CSU Bakersfield on Sunday at Margie Wright Diamond.
Fresno State (22-11) has won seven straight games overall, has won 15 consecutive non-conference games, and improved to 14-2 at home this season. The 'Dogs defeated Santa Clara (8-21) for the second consecutive day after a 12-4 win in six innings on Saturday and closed the tournament with a win in its only game against Valley rival CSU Bakersfield (13-16).
Senior Rachel Minogue and junior Kaitlyn Jennings both had two this in each of the two Bulldog games on Sunday, with each tallying a double and Minogue driving in four runs while Jennings had three RBIs and four runs scored. After going 7-for-7 over two games on Saturday, junior Miranda Rohleder was 2-for-4 with a hit-by-pitch and two runs scored on Sunday and Schuylar Broussard also had a two-hit day.
Sophomore Hailey Dolcini had a hand in both wins on Sunday, throwing five shutout innings with six strikeouts to earn the win vs. Santa Clara and picking up her second save of the year with a perfect ninth inning against CSU Bakersfield. Danielle East threw three shutout innings over the two games and Danielle Lung started and earned the win against the Roadrunners to improve her season record to 8-1.
How it Happened – vs. Santa Clara
The 'Dogs scored five runs over the first two innings against Santa Clara on Saturday and repeated the feat against the Broncos on Sunday. After Dolcini struck out the side in the top of the first, the Bulldogs got on the board quickly as Jennings had a one-out single and scored on a double from Minogue (watch). Two batters later, Jade Nua came through with an infield single and Minogue was able to come around to score from second (watch).
In the third, Vanessa M. Hernandez had a single and Rohleder was hit by a pitch and with two away. Jennings brought them both in with a double to center (watch). Minogue followed with an infield single to short, and a throwing error from the Bronco third baseman allowed Jennings to come in to score and make it a 5-0 Bulldog lead. Fresno State added a run in the third inning as it loaded the bases on a Broussard single and two walks and with two away Minogue drew a bases-loaded walk to force in Hernandez from third.
Dolcini did not allow a hit through the first three innings before Eleni Spirakis began the fourth inning with a double. She would be stranded at third, however, and Dolcini would allow just two singles and no walks with six strikeouts through five innings. East retired the Broncos in order in the sixth and allowed a one-out bloop double but nothing more in the seventh to complete Fresno State's eighth shutout of the season.
How it Happened – vs. CSU Bakersfield
For the second consecutive game and the 10th time this season, Fresno State scored in the first inning and went on to record a victory. In fact, the Bulldogs again tallied five runs over the first two innings, benefiting from two CSU Bakersfield errors in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead before posting four runs in the second.
Hernandez walked and Rohleder had a bunt single to start the inning and Jennings brought in Hernandez from third with an infield single (watch). Jennings stole second to put runners on first and second for Minogue, who brought them both in with a single through the right side and advanced to second on a CSUB throwing error (watch). With two away, Kelcey Carrasco brought in pinch runner Aaliyah Cuevas with an RBI single to put the 'Dogs up 5-0 (watch).
The Roadrunners got one run back in the third inning with a leadoff walk and an RBI double from Chris Hipa. After the teams matched zeros in the fourth and fifth innings, CSUB loaded the bases in the top of the sixth as it started the inning with a single and two walks. The visitors scored one run on a hit batter and another on a wild pitch, but with runners on second and third and one out the 'Dogs turned a double play on a liner to second to get out of the inning still leading 5-3 (watch).
Dolcini entered in the seventh and needed just 13 pitches to get a groundout, strikeout, and fly out to finish the win (watch).

On her play…
"I'm just trying to stay consistent, trying to just get on base and have my teammates move me over. When people get on base my job is to just try to get them in. Consistency is my main thing that I focus on and it's important to keep staying consistent and not having the ups and downs."
