LAS VEGAS, Nev. – UNLV ace Jenny Bressler scattered six hits to record her MW-leading 16th victory of the season as she led the Rebels to a 7-0 over the Bulldogs in the opener of the MW series in Las Vegas.
Â
Fresno State (22-12, 1-6 MW) had base runners in each of the first six innings but Bressler was able to strand eight runners as she recorded her fifth shutout of the season. UNLV (26-7, 7-2 MW) hit three solo home runs en route to improving on its best start to a season in program history and moving to 13-2 at home this season.
Â
McKenzie Wilson and Hayleigh Galvan each had two hits to lead the Bulldogs offensively. The 'Dogs drew three walks and had a hit batter in addition to their six hits but Bressler tallied seven strikeouts and the Rebels turned a pair of double plays defensively.
Â
How it Happened
Hailey Dolcini retired the first two batters in the first inning before UNLV got its offense going. Justine Federe and Mia Trejo hit back-to-back solo home runs to give the Rebels a 2-0 lead. The next Rebel hitter reached on an error and scored on an RBI single from Samantha Diaz to put the home team up 3-0.
Â
The Bulldogs had baserunners in each of the first six innings of the game, but in the first two lined into a pair of inning-ending double plays with strong defensive plays by the Rebels. In the bottom of the third UNLV added to its lead as Federe had a one-out double and Trejo followed with an RBI single.
Â
After a scoreless fourth inning, the 'Dogs had a two-out rally in the fifth as Schuylar Broussard walked and Wilson had a single. Miranda Rohleder came through with a single to right, but right fielder Reina Bondi was able to throw out pinch runner Aaliyah Cuevas at the plate to end the inning.
Â
The Rebels added a pair of runs in the fifth as they rattled off a single and two doubles in succession with one away. Fresno State again threatened in the top of the sixth as Rachel Minogue and Galvan singled and Kelcey Carrasco was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two out, but Bressler got a groundout to end the inning. Â
Â
UNLV moved ahead 7-0 in the bottom of the sixth as Denise Armendariz had a pinch-hit solo homer. Bressler was able to complete the win by retiring the side in order in the seventh.
