LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Freshman Danielle Lung allowed just three singles over six scoreless innings and Fresno State used a three-run first inning to even the weekend series at UNLV with a 4-0 shutout on Saturday in Las Vegas.
Lung struck out a pair and improved to 9-1 in her freshman season. Sophomore Danielle East got the last three outs in the seventh as Fresno State (23-12, 2-6 MW) handed UNLV (26-8, 7-3 MW) just its fourth shutout of the season and just its third home loss.
The Rebels drew seven walks and had two hit batters but Lung and East held them to 2-for-16 (.125) hitting with runners on base and permitted only three UNLV at-bats in the game with runners in scoring position. Fresno State scored its three runs in the first inning all with two out and added an insurance run in the 7th in its ninth shutout win of the year.
How it Happened
Fresno State was aggressive at the plate early in Saturday's contest and it payed off with three runs in the first inning. The first two hitters reached as McKenzie Wilson singled and Miranda Rohleder drew a walk but UNLV got the next two outs. The 'Dogs came through big with two away as Hayleigh Galvan had an RBI single (watch), Jade Nua split the gap in left center with a ground-rule double (watch), and Kelcey Carrasco brought in Galvan with an RBI single (watch).
UNLV looked for a two-out rally of its own in the bottom of the first but Lung got a big strikeout to strand the three runners (watch). The Rebels loaded the bases again with two out in the third on a single and two walks but Lung again escaped the inning as she induced a groundout (watch).
The Bulldogs had runners in each of the first four innings and had the leadoff hitter reach in the third and fourth but couldn't add to their lead. Lung stranded two more baserunners in the fourth, one in the fifth, and one in the sixth.
In the top of the 7th, the Bulldogs loaded the bases with nobody out on singles from Vanessa M. Hernandez and Wilson and a walk from Rohleder. Rachel Minogue drove in a run with a groundball that was misplayed by the UNLV second baseman, but the Rebels were able to turn a double play on a hard line drive to limit the damage to one run.
UNLV got its leadoff hitter on with a walk to start the bottom of the seventh. East entered and got a double play grounder to erase the baserunner (watch) then got a fly out to complete the shutout (watch).
