LAS VEGAS, Nev. – With the Bulldogs trailing 3-2 and down to their final out in the seventh inning Hayleigh Galvan hit a three-run home run (watch) to lead her team to a 5-3 win in the series finale at UNLV on Sunday.
Â
Fresno State (24-12, 3-6 MW) handed UNLV (26-9, 7-4 MW) its first MW series loss of the season, winning the last two games of the series against a Rebel team that had been 14-2 at home this season. On Sunday the 'Dogs battled back from down 2-0 to tie it and, with the potential tying run at second base, Galvan left the yard to center and freshman Danielle Lung finished off UNLV in the seventh for her 10th victory.
Â
Rachel Minogue was 2-for-2 with a walk, a sacrifice fly, and an RBI and helped set the table for Galvan as she singled after Miranda Rohleder drew a nine-pitch walk with one out in the seventh inning. Galvan also had two hits in the contest as the Bulldogs scored five runs against UNLV ace Jenny Bressler, who led the MW with a 16-3 record and a 1.58 season ERA coming into the game.
Â
How it Happened
The 'Dogs had a single in the first inning and had a single and a walk in the second but were unable to break through. The Rebels went down in order in the first, but in the second Mia Trejo drew a leadoff walk and consecutive one-out doubles from Myranda Bueno and Samantha Diaz scored a pair of runs. Diaz would be left at second as Vanessa M. Hernandez made a great stop and throw from deep in the hole at short to end the inning (watch).
Â
UNLV loaded the bases in the bottom of the third but Danielle East was able to strand all three runners. The 'Dogs left the bases loaded in the fourth inning but broke through in the fifth as Hernandez had a leadoff double and scored on a McKenzie Wilson bunt single and UNLV throwing error (watch). Wilson made it to third on the error and scored the tying run on Minogue's sacrifice fly (watch).
Â
Lung pitched scoreless fourth and fifth innings, thanks in part to a sensational diving catch by Schuylar Broussard for the second out of the fifth (watch). In the sixth inning UNLV loaded the bases with three singles and was able to score the go-ahead run with two out on a Bulldog throwing error.
Â
In the top of the seventh, Bressler got the first out before Rohleder and Minogue reached. She got the second out to move one out away from victory before Galvan homered on an 0-1 pitch (watch). UNLV got a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh but Lung got a groundout and a pop out to finish the game (watch).

Hayleigh Galvan
On her go-ahead home run…
"I knew the earlier at-bat she beat me outside so my mentality going in was that she wouldn't beat me outside again. I knew that she wasn't going to bust me in or throw a change up and that she was going to throw outside again and I was like 'this is my pitch and I'm going to take it deep'". I looked for the outside pitch and I got it and I did what I had to do to help the team out."
Â
On how it felt rounding the bases…
"It's an amazing feeling knowing that all of the hard work has been put in to this moment and everybody believed in me. I had to show up for my team and I couldn't have done it without our pitchers and everybody getting on base in front of me. It's an incredible feeling knowing that I could do that for my team and help get us the series win."
Â
On winning the series before heading home…
"It was really important getting the series win and bringing the momentum going back home. We have all the momentum on our side. Our offense is starting to come together and our pitching is coming around and we have a lot of confidence."
