Bulldogs split doubleheader vs. Sacramento State
4/10/2019 10:24:00 PM | Softball
FRESNO, Calif. – Sophomore Hailey Dolcini tossed a one-hit shutout to lead Fresno State to a 4-0 win over Sacramento State in the nightcap of a doubleheader after the Hornets posted a shutout of their own, 3-0, in the opener on Wednesday at Margie Wright Diamond.
Â
Fresno State (25-13) saw its 15-game nonconference winning streak ended in the first game but rebounded with a shutout win in game two. Dolcini allowed just one baserunner on a fourth-inning single while striking out seven after Savanna Corr permitted just four Bulldog hits in a shutout win for Sacramento State (22-18).
Â
Freshman McKenzie Wilson was 3-for-3 with three runs in the second game and totaled four hits and three stolen bases on the day. Miranda Rohleder was 2-for-2 with two RBIs in the 4-0 win while the Bulldog pitchers did not allow a single earned run on the day. All three runs scored against Danielle Lung in the opener were unearned as the freshman tallied seven strikeouts in a complete-game effort.
Â
How it Happened – Game One
All three runs in the opener came on one swing of the bat by Sacramento State in the fifth inning. Lung stranded two base runners in the first inning and both teams failed to score despite loading the bases with only one out in the third inning. In the top half the Hornets loaded the bases on three singles but Lung got a strikeout and a lineout to strand three, and in the bottom half the 'Dogs got three aboard on a single, an error, and a walk but Corr got a groundout and pop out to escape the inning.
Â
In the top of the fifth, Lung got the first two Hornet hitters out but a double and an intentional walk put two on with two out. The inning would be extended as a Bulldog fielding error loaded the bases with two away and Sydney Rasmussen cleared the bases with a three-run double to center field.
Â
The Bulldogs threatened in the sixth inning as Rachel Minogue had a one-out double and Hayleigh Galvan walked with two away to bring the tying run to the plate but Corr escaped the inning. Lung limited the Hornets to just one baserunner over the last two innings but the 'Dogs couldn't get on the scoreboard as Corr retired the side in order in the seventh for her 15th win of the season.
Â
How It Happened – Game Two
The 'Dogs got on the scoreboard early in the second game with a run in the first inning. Wilson singled to lead off the inning, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Rohleder, and scored on a wild pitch to quickly give her team a 1-0 lead (watch). Â
Â
Dolcini was perfect her first time through the Sacramento State order, and in the bottom of the third the 'Dogs doubled their lead as, in similar fashion to the first inning, Wilson had a leadoff single, stole second, and scored on an RBI single from Rohleder (watch).
Â
Dolcini retired the first 10 batters she faced before Sacramento State got its only baserunner of the game as Brianna Bowers hit a line drive to third that was just out of the reach of a leaping Schuylar Broussard.
Â
Fresno State added a pair of runs in the fifth inning as Broussard and Wilson both singled and Rohleder brought in pinch runner Aaliyah Cuevas with an RBI double (watch). Minogue followed with an RBI single through the right side to make it 4-0 (watch) and the 'Dogs would load the bases with two out but couldn't add on.
Â
Dolcini didn't need any more insurance as, after the Bowers single, she retired the next 11 Sacramento State hitters in order to end the game.
