Bulldogs fall to Brown on the road, 19-13
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Fresno State lacrosse team completed its weekend trip to the east coast with a 19-13 loss at Brown on Sunday morning. The Bulldogs move to 7-4 on the season with Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play approaching next weekend.
Â
Fresno State's offense saw a strong start, but the Bulldog defense struggled to keep Brown sophomore Risa Mosenthal under control as she scored nine of the Bears' 19 goals in the game. Mosenthal leads Brown this season with 46 goals, and surpassed the 100 goal mark in her two-year career on Sunday.
Â
The Bulldogs had seven goal-scorers against the Bears. Junior attacker Kayla Galet led the charge for the 'Dogs with four goals on the day. Senior attacker Ryleigh Bone, freshman midfielder Sydney Skalstad and sophomore attacker Hannah Krats contributed two each while junior midfielder Marina Mayo, and junior attackers Tiffiny Wallace and Jordyn Pandolfo tallied one apiece.
Â
Junior goalkeeper Laurel Maunder got the start in the cage with two saves in the opening 27:06. Redshirt freshman keeper Courtney Walburger came in late in the first half, got straight to work and remained in the game to close out the finishing minutes with a season-high four saves in 32:54.
Â
How it happened
FIRST HALF
Galet found the back of the net in the second minute of game action on the assist from Wallace to give the 'Dogs a 1-0 lead. Brown quickly erased the advantage as Mosenthal scored her first of the game at 27:37.
Â
Mayo scored on the assist from Bone to put Fresno State back on top with 24:41 to go in the first half. Brown would score five unanswered goals to separate itself in the scoring with a 6-2 lead with 17:10 left in the opening half. Skalstad scored her first goal of the game to end the scoring run for the Bears, but Brown won the next draw and scored within six seconds of the Bulldog goal for a 7-3 lead.
Â
Both teams worked on defense for a scoreless six and a half minutes before Wallace fired and scored her only goal of the match with 9:37 on the clock.
Â
The next seven minutes went the way of the Bears, as a 5-1 run in the seven minute span would bring Walburger into the cage with 2:54 left in the opening half. Bone broke up Brown's run with a converted free-position shot.
Â
Walburger picked up a pair of saves in the final minutes of the half to keep the Bears off in the final minutes. Fresno State trailed 12-5 at the half.
Â
SECOND HALF
Brown took advantage of its opening possession and scored in the first 60 seconds, but Krats answered back and scored on the assist from Bone.
Â
The 'Dogs saw a bit of momentum with Pandolfo scoring to put the Bulldogs within six with 22:54 to go. Brown added another, but Fresno State kept firing as Galet and Skalstad each scored their second goal of the game. Fresno State trailed 15-9 with 16:36 to go.
Â
A 3-0 run from Brown in the next four minutes would be too much for the Bulldog offense to match as the Bears took a 18-9 lead with 12:16 to go.
Â
Krats scored on a free-position shot to put an end to the Bulldogs' dry spell as the clock read 8:01, but no other 'Dog could find the net until the final seconds of the match.
Â
Fresno State ended on a 3-0 run in the final 40 seconds, with Galet scoring a pair of goals at 40 and 23 seconds remaining. The 'Dogs won the last four draw controls of the match to keep the scoring alive and Bone landed one in with just 1.6 seconds left on the clock, but time ran out as Brown finished with a 19-13 lead.
