'Dogs stun Cougars in 4-3 thriller

FRESNO, Calif. – Trailing 3-1, Fresno State rallied for a thrilling 4-3 win on Monday afternoon over BYU at Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center. Freshman Jennifer Timotin clinched the match 7-5 in the third set of the final match.      Â

DOUBLES
BYU took a 1-0 lead in doubles play with a 6-3 win on Court 2 from Polina Malykh and Madeline Almeida. Timotin and Georgia Lawson evened doubles play at 1-1 with a 6-2 win at No. 1 but the Cougars would claim the first dual's opening point with a 6-3 win on Court 3 from Samantha Smith and Taylah Beckman.

SINGLES
Fresno State evened the dual at 1-1 as freshman Shir Azran worked quickly on Court 5, defeating Almeida 6-0, 6-2. BYU answered back though by pulling to within one point of the match behind a pair of straight-set wins from Kate Cusick and Malykh.

A.C. Hummel would answer for the Bulldogs, halting BYU's momentum with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Smith at the No. 4 spot.

After dropping her first set with Beckman, Lawson would force a third set with a 6-0 second set win. The junior would gut out a 7-6 final set, winning the tiebreak 7-5 put the outcome of the dual on Court 1. Timotin would take a commanding 5-2 lead in the final set for the Bulldogs but Anastasia Abramyan would not go down quietly. The Cougar would rattle off three straight points to tie the set at 5-5 but Timotin would strike back. The Bulldog would break Abramyan's serve and close out the match on serve, clinching the dual with a 7-6, 3-6, 7-5 match.

The loss was BYU's first against a Mountain West team in four matches this season.
