COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Fresno State's Shir Azran has been named Mountain West Women's Tennis Player of the Week for matches played through April 16. It is the freshman's first weekly honor of her career.
Â
In matches against San Jose State and Nevada last weekend, Azran combined to post a 4-0 record. In doubles, both of the freshman's wins with teammate A.C. Hummel helped lead the Bulldogs to winning the doubles point.
Â
The native of Bat-Yam, Israel opened the week with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Miyo Kobayashi in the No. 2 match against the Spartans. Azran then moved up to the No. 1 position against the Wolf Pack two days later. In her first match of the season in the top spot, the freshman defeated Adriana Gergelyova 6-2, 6-1.
Â
With her win at No. 1, Azran became the first Bulldog since Fresno State became a member of the Mountain West to win a match at all six singles positions. The Bulldog also improved her record to a team-best 12-2 this spring and leads all freshmen in the Mountain West with an .857 winning percentage.
