LOGAN, Utah – Fresno State broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the top of the seventh, all of which scored with two outs, to pull away for a 5-2 victory over Utah State in the second game of the series in Logan.
Fresno State (29-14, 7-7 MW) clinched its third straight MW series win, having posted an 11-6 victory in the opener on Thursday, and won for the 14th time over the last 17 games. The win was the 1,800th in program history, bringing the all-time record to 1800-703-2 in 42 seasons as a program.
Schuylar Broussard homered for the second consecutive game and scored twice while going 2-for-3 and McKenzie Wilson drove in two runs in the win. Hailey Dolcini allowed just seven hits and two runs with six strikeouts over 6.1 innings and Danielle East got the last two outs to earn a save for the second consecutive day.
How it Happened
After neither team had a baserunner in the first inning, the Bulldogs got on the board in the second. Vanessa Hernandez led off with a double and was still at second with two out before Kaitlyn Jennings banged a doubled off the wall in right center to bring in Hernandez and give Fresno State the lead (watch).
Dolcini was perfect through the first three innings with five strikeouts, but Kapri Toone kept the Utah State (13-24, 4-12 MW) deficit at one into the fourth. The Aggies got two on with a pair of bunt singles in the bottom of the fourth and tied the game on an RBI double from Kenzie Bolin. The Aggies took the lead as Allanah Alvarado followed with an RBI single but Dolcini kept the damage at two runs, thanks in part to a base stealer thrown out by Kelcey Carrasco to end the inning (watch).
The 'Dogs quickly pulled back even in the top of the fifth as Broussard hit an opposite-field solo home run to right center with one away (watch). The Aggies stranded two runners in the sixth, and in the seventh the 'Dogs got a runner when Carrasco was hit by a pitch but had just a runner on first with two out.
Broussard extended the inning with a single before Jade Nua drove in Jennings with a pinch-hit RBI knock (watch). Wilson followed with a shot over the head of the left fielder, driving in two big insurance runs with her first career double (watch).
Dolcini tallied her sixth strikeout to start the bottom of the seventh but the Aggies followed with a double. East entered and allowed a single as Utah State brought the tying run to the plate, but she got the next two hitters on a groundout and a flyout to end the game (watch).
Notable
The Bulldogs will look for their first MW series sweep of the year when the series concludes at 11 a.m. PT on Saturday. A win would give Fresno State its 38th consecutive 30-win season.
