No. 18 Fresno State downs Concordia, 11-4

IRVINE, Calif. – The No. 18 Fresno State water polo team downed Concordia 11-4 in its regular season finale, Friday afternoon. The win solidified the Bulldogs as the No. 4 seed in the 2019 Golden Coast Conference Championship Tournament.
Fresno State (12-14, 4-3 GCC) was led by Claire Schade and Callie Woodruff, the duo tallied seven of the Bulldogs' goals. Schade set a new career-high with four goals, while Woodruff chalked a hat trick and swiped four steals in the game. Mackenzie Richards started in goal for the Bulldogs, she logged seven saves against the Eagles.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Emily Nicholson opened scoring for Fresno State, Callie Woodruff made it back-to-back goals to take a 2-0 lead with 6:10 left in the quarter. Concordia got on the scoreboard, finding the back of the net with 2:27 left. Fresno State finished the first eight minutes with a 2-1 lead.
Schade started the second quarter with back-to-back goals for the Bulldogs, to earn a 4-1 lead with 3:48 left. Nicholson drew a clutch exclusion, and Woodruff capitalized with a goal on the power play. Woodruff would turn around and draw another exclusion for the Bulldogs, and Fresno State took a timeout to draw up a play with 36 second left. Woodruff scored her third goal of the game on the power play, chalking a hat trick. The Bulldogs held Concordia scoreless for the entirety of the second quarter. Fresno State took a 6-1 lead into halftime.
Fresno State continued firing on offense, starting the third quarter with two consecutive shots but the Concordia goalkeeper managed to grab the saves. Concordia earned a power play at the five-minute mark, but Fresno State's defense was able to hold off the Eagles. Sydney Coachman put the Bulldogs up 7-1 when she found the back of the net with 4:06 left in the quarter. Fresno State made it a 6-0 run after Sienna Jagielski scored on a power play. After a nearly 14 minutes without a goal, the Eagles scored to make it an 8-2 game with 2:30 left in the quarter. Concordia scored one more goal, but Fresno State would take an 8-3 lead into the final quarter.
The Eagles made a goalkeeper change to start the final eight minutes. Schade chalked a hat trick on the day, sending one to the back of the net with 7:44 left in the game. Woodruff swiped a steal for the Bulldogs, and Schade capitalized on the turnover with another goal. That would set a new career-high for Schade with four goals in the game, giving Fresno State a 10-3 lead with 5:33 left. The Eagles scored on a power play with 4:59 to go in regulation, but Megan Greenwood countered with a goal for the Bulldogs. Madelynn Garcia subbed in at goalkeeper for Fresno State to finish the game. Concordia drew an exclusion and took a timeout, but Garcia made a big save for the Bulldogs on the power play. Fresno State took the win 11-4.
