FRESNO, Calif. – Kelcey Carrasco homered for the second straight day and McKenzie Wilson delivered a three-run triple as the Bulldogs earned a 5-1 win over New Mexico on Saturday afternoon.
Fresno State (32-15, 10-7 MW) clinched its fourth consecutive MW series victory and has won five straight MW games as well as 10 of its last 12 league contests. New Mexico (12-34, 3-14 MW) played the Bulldogs tough on Saturday and trailed just 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning before Wilson cleared the bases to give the 'Dogs some insurance going to the seventh.
Danielle Lung allowed just five hits and one run battling through six innings to earn her 14th win of the season and Danielle East retired the Lobos in order in the seventh to complete the victory. After going 3-for-3 with a grand slam on Friday, Carrasco hit a solo homer on Saturday and had a bunt single in the three-run bottom of the sixth.
How it Happened
Fresno State loaded the bases on a single and two walks in the first inning but couldn't score. New Mexico loaded the bases in the second on two walks and a hit batter, but Lung got a strikeout and the 'Dogs turned a double play as Wilson caught a fly ball in left and her relay throw in caught the Lobo runner off of third base to end the inning.
In the home half of the second Carrasco led off with a solo home run to get the 'Dogs on the board first. Schuylar Broussard followed with a double to right and she would move to third on an errant pick-off throw from the New Mexico catcher and then score on a wild pitch to make it a 2-0 Bulldog lead.
Lung stranded two more base runners in the third and struck out the first two batters she faced in the fourth, but a single and a walk put a runner in scoring position with two out and Alyeah Wilbon delivered an RBI single. Lung got the next hitter to ground out, however, to keep the 'Dogs ahead 2-1.
The score held into the bottom of the sixth inning. Fresno State loaded the bases with one out on walks from Jade Nua and Vanessa M. Hernandez and Carrasco's single, and Wilson chopped a ball just inside the first base line that would roll all the way into the right field corner to clear the bases and give the freshman her second career triple.
East came in for the seventh and got two fly outs and an infield pop out to end the game throwing just nine pitches.
Notable
Fresno State will look for its second straight MW series sweep in the finale of the three-game set on Sunday at 11 a.m.
